I wanted to take physics over the summer (before my freshman year) but a lot of people said not to take pre-reqs over the summer if i could avoid it :P

What about auditing a course? Is that okay, and do med schools see that? I'm not sure how auditing a course works though.

I know of someone who audited a pre-reg or two at a local university during the summer in order to have a leg up when they went back in the fall and took the class “for real”. I don’t know how effective it was and, though I am sure not everyone will agree with me, it doesn’t seem quite kosher. That being said, this person did it with no problems so I assume it is allowed.

Audits do show up on a transcript since to formally audit a course, you must register for it.

They’re listed like regular classes (name, course number), but marked “Audit” and show no grade.

“Sitting in” on a class–or an informal audit-- doesn’t show up on a transcript, but it’s very unlikely a prof or a school will allow a student who is not currently enrolled at the college to sit in on a class.

If you have to discipline to self-study, MIT’s OpenCourseWare has a college-level course on Newtonian Physics.

I don’t know for sure, but I would think auditing a pre-req the summer before you started college would look weird. There are a million better things you could do with that summer than audit a pre-req.

Wait, does the summer before your 1st year count as part of your college experience?

I ask this because your high school extracurriculars don’t matter so if you did something during the summer before you started college, would it still count as an extracurricular during college?

Like if I shadowed a doctor during the summer before 1st year. Does it “count”?

Focus on having fun in a summer, spend time with friends, go to the pool, whatever, it will have much more benefits than your current plan. D. has never taken any single summer class pre-req or any other, there is simply no need. You will miss your summers once you get into Med. School. You will ask yourself, why you did not enjoy them more.

hope you do well, this is the first grade that Med School Adcoms will see (it’s going to be a part of your GPA), and I don’t think you ever mentioned that you were planning on doing this at a CC and not at a school of equal caliber to yours. Keep in mind you are now also taking a pre-req at a lower caliber school - something that is usually frowned upon.

Ace: if you shadow a doctor before college and continue into college, then certainly that start date would be listed. I think if you do something interesting/amazing after HS graduation, go ahead and list it, but it may not get much of a look that first summer unless it fits into the overall picture quite well.

Thanks somemom. Will do. I already talked to a couple physicians this week and they’re going to get back to me on that.

I definitely agree with this. I’ve self studied AP science classes before (you’re concerned about physics correct?). It’s such a wonderful way to learn the material at your own pace without the worry of a grade. Of course, this means you’ll need to really motivate yourself. This is all self-discipline. No one will be nagging you to study for a test. It’s all on you.

If you do need help with self studying, you can also visit tutoring services regularly. I find them quite helpful in making the material easier to go through.

Thanks guys, I just wanted a class over the summer because I wasn’t doing anything else, and it could potentially give me a better GPA, by getting a lighter courseload, because I am doing engineering. But I will self study a bit over the summer and relax instead.
