pre vet school.

Hi,
My sister is pre-vet and wants to major in either biology or animal sciences.
She got in to Va tech, UIUC, Syracuse, UC Davis, Drexel, Minnesota Twin Cities, and Pittsburgh.
She is not a resident of any state apparently; she lived in va for 4 years and 2 years in new york... she didnt get into any SUNY schools

It seems like, all the schools are similar in size but where would be a great place for pre-vet?

Thanks!

I can’t say anything from experience, but I’ve heard UC Davis has a good pre-vet undergrad program.

Virginia Tech, Illinois, UCD, and Minnesota have vet schools, which is a huge bonus for a pre-vet applicant. Colleges with vet schools are more likely to offer specialized courses vet schools sometimes require of pre-vet applicants (e.g. animal nutrition at NCSU). They also offer a wide range of volunteer/internship opportunities, which is vital since applicants are usually expected to have upwards of 1000 hours of clinical and animal handling experience.

Drexel doesn’t have a vet school of its own, but it’s literally next door to Penn, which has a superb vet school. I don’t know how close the connections between the two are, but I’m sure a qualified Drexel student could intern or volunteer there.

Pitt has neither the agriculture and land grant offerings of Penn State nor the vet school of Penn. I would scratch it. The same goes for Syracuse.

Minnesota is her cheapest option if she didn’t receive financial aid anywhere ($26K a year). If she could get in-state tuition at Virginia Tech, however, that would probably work best ($17K a year).

The VMRCVM (VA/MD Regional College of Vet Med)- at VT- is a very well regarded vet school and I have heard great things (from our vet and others) about its undergraduate program as well.

They just opened one new 10 million dollar building for infectious disease research and are about to open another 14 mil dollar Veterinary Medicine Instructional building for state-of-the art clinical techniques. It should open for the incoming class of 2016. Like warblersrule stated, if your sister could take advantage of the opportunities as an UG in a school/clinical setting such as this, she would be very fortunate. VT is a land grant institution which also brings about opportunities for agricultural and farm animal care.
Good luck to her!

Thank you all so much!!!
