PreAP classes

I never knew schools had "PreAP" classes
Sounds ridiculous ; you're either in an AP class or you're not.

Does anyone agree with me here? o_O

Disagreeing - kind of. AP classes here aren't "allowed" until junior year (though I've found that b*tching repeatedly to your counselor may encourage exceptions), so preAP courses are a way for the kids who WILL take AP to get away from the idiots. Given, most kids in preAP are complete idiots anyway, as the courses aren't particularily rigorous, but it's better than nothing - plus they're weighted 1.1% (as opposed to AP's 1.2%).

My school doesnt weigh AP classes
Great huh

I dunno, PreAP sounds so.. elementary

i think in most schools, these are called HONORS classes.

And in most schools, you can sign up for APs if you have the necessary credentials (ie, pre-calc for AP Calc) regardless of your year.

I think schools coined the term "Pre-AP" so they can use the word "AP" to make it look more advanced.

exactly....but technically...AP is college level...so Pre-AP would be pre-college...menaing high school...and thats just dumb because all of the classes are high school classes..Pre-AP..i just dont get it.

At my school, pre-AP classes are honors classes in a subject that also has an AP class. So Algebra I would just be an honors class, because there isn't AP Algebra, but the honors-level Chemistry class is designated "pre-AP" because it's a prerequisite for AP Chem. Not all AP classes have a corresponding pre-AP class, but many do.

So they don't allow anyone to enter the AP class if they haven't taken the "pre-AP" class?

If you want to take the AP class without having taken the pre-AP class, usually you and your parents have to sign a form saying that you accept the fact that you are skipping steps in the course sequence, and sometimes you need permission from the teacher as well. My GC initially wouldn't let me register for AP Physics because I'd taken two years of Chemistry (pre-AP and AP) rather than taking either the integrated physics-chemistry class (basic intros to each subject) or the pre-AP physics class, but I talked to the teacher and he said it would be okay. (So now I'm making an A in AP Physics and laughing at my GC!)
