PreCalc w/ OUT Alg. 2?

Hey guys.

So Im an upcoming Junior and I took Alg. 2 honors through FLVS so that I could take PreCalc my junior year so that then I can take Calc for business, Calc AB, and Calc BC, all before I apply to college.

Supposedly, I was going to finish a substantial amount of Alg. 2 during the summer so that I am ready for Precalc come mid August.

But here's the deal-

Besides Alg. 2, I took two other classes online (one being AP and the other regular because its a foreign language), I volunteered more than a 100 hours, and I took two more classes in the local community college plus one more class in the local community school (yet another foreign language).

So, evidently, I didn't have enough time.

Now I've been in Alg. 2 for 9 weeks and Im supposed to be done with 50% of the first semester and all I've done is 30%.

Im sooo behind.

Do you think it'd really hurt me if I took Alg. 2 and Precalc at the same time? Cause I mean, there isn't another way for me... I start PreCalc on Aug. 20 and I'd probably finish Alg. 2 by December...

Also, is anyone else taking Alg. 2 through FLVS? I have Ms. Macke and the lessons are so unclear and she is such an idiot... :(

I forgot to mention that I'd aldo be taking Stats... so my math schedule for Junior year would look like this:

Alg. 2 Honors

PreCalc Honors

AP Stats

All at the same time.... Is this going to cause me trouble???

It depends, whats your grade in Alg 2 Honors now?

It also depends on your schools pre-calc curriculum.

Is there any way you can find out what the year would start out with? Some alg. 2 concepts aren't needed for pre-calc immediately.

If you're good at math, just learn the algebra 2 as you go along with precal.

It's not too hard.

I was in the EXACT same boat. Last year I took Algebra 2 Hon on FLVS (with Mrs. Van Ost...excellent teacher), and I didn't even get to 50% before school started. So, it turned out that I was going through both Algebra 2 and Precalc at the same time, and it wasn't bad at all. I didn't finish Algebra 2 until February. The only trouble I had was when we began to learn about logarithms and logarithmic functions in precalc, and I hadn't learned anything about logs in Algebra 2 yet, so I struggled through that a bit. I still got an A first semester and second semester.

At this point in Algebra 2, you should have enough knowledge to get off to a good start in precalc.

Jman what grade are you in? rank?

I'm a rising junior.

idk about rank. I wanted to ask my counselor last year, but I never got around to it. My GPA isn't really that high. I've made a small amount of B's and C's, just out of laziness. :D

I'm one of those people who is really smart, but never does homework. I took two AP's last year (us govt and us hist) and passed both (4 on govt, 3 on history), and I'd bet you ANYTHING my teachers thought I wouldn't pass. lol

However, I'm going to try to change everything around for junior year. I CANNOT be lazy with 5 AP classes and 2 college courses. All the classes I'm taking, I know I'll be good at (with the exception of AP Physics...that's a wild card). The only class I have ever had trouble with was chemistry. I hate that subject so much.

You know you don't have to take Calc AB in order to take Calc BC, right? So you could take AP Stats and AP Calc senior year...stats is much easier than calc, at least at my school it is.

Me too!

If you need help with Alg II, I might be able to assist.

I'm done with semester 1 (except for the exam), I did half of semester 1 yesterday (2 modules), so I think it's possible that you can still finish before school starts if you're starting Aug 20th.. I have a 97% in the class. Everything seems pretty clear in her lessons. I've never had to call her for help (except to unlock things and oral components), so I consider myself pretty decent at the subject.

I stayed on pace for the first 2 months of summer, and now with only a couple weeks left before school I've been finishing the modules pretty quickly, so I should be done before school starts.

And JMan's already been in your situation, so it's doable.

Armando are you taking the full 2 semesters of Alg 2? if you are how are you close to being finished with it? also are you taking honors?

Yes, I'm taking Honors, and I expect to be done some time next week if I keep working at the pace I'm at now. I'm taking the full 2 semesters. Semester 2 seems a bit shorter :)

Thanks for the replies guys!

Ok so apparently I'll be able to handle it and it's been done before so that's awesome.

Unfortunately though, my teacher is... augh... how to put how to put it... an imbecile. There you go. Seriously, all the lessons are SO unclear I need to e-mail her about them daily. No kidding. And then she takes about 4 days to answer so I end up so far behind. :(

Is there any way I can switch my teacher???

I don't think so :(

I'm assuming teachers don't have the same lessons?
