My son is a high school junior who likes the math/sciences - particularly physics. However, on recent college tours he has become more interested in engineering. He was fascinated by Northwestern's Engineering First curriculum for freshmen, especially the Engineering Design for community service type projects.

What are some good summer engineering programs ? Both for learning about engineering as a discipline and to do actual project work. What about Columbia's summer course ? Engineering Design via Community Service projects. Can anyone attest to the quality of this course / program ? It is very expensive - >$6400 - for about 2.5 weeks !!! U of Maryland and U of Illinois have week long Discovering Engineering courses which are much more reasonable in cost.

I would love to know of anyone's experience / recommendations on this topic. We are very late in the process and are limited in schedule flexibility due to my son's orchestra tour which had precluded many (longer) science programs so we were planning to work out something custom (& creative hopefully) for his summer enrichment. However, now we want to really help him figure out whether engineering is where he should be headed as well as feed his excitement in engineering design.

Thanks for the help !
