Very impressive EC’s and GPA/test scores. Since you’re interested in economics, I would try to get a leadership position in DECA or your Economics Research team. Yale, Stanford and MIT are reaches no matter who you are, but you have as good a chance as anyone; i’d say Dartmouth, Duke, Brown, Columbia and Williams are matches, and UMich Ross & UVA should be pretty likely acceptances. Your resume is great, if you just maintain your grades I’d say you’re pretty set. Good luck!!

*You stand a chance at all of them, who knows. The top unis are very difficult to predict, because once youve met certain individual benchmarks as per each component of your application it just depends on whether or not youre a good fit based on your application as a composite. It’s possible, but who knows.

Your academics are perfect, but your ECs are kind of all over the place. And joining and starting so many clubs in your junior and sophomore year doesn’t speak passion, it just seems very much so like a “i’m doing as much as I can to get into college” endeavor. I would consider dropping the spanish cultures club, volunteering club, and role-model leader club, unless any of them are especially important to you or you think youre gaining an important experience from them. From a first glance, I dont think these three are going to do much for you.

In your junior year it is clear that you’ve narrowed in on a business/economics path. Since youre just starting to show that your junior year, you want to move quickly with them, and to make them stand out in your application. The 3 aforementioned clubs draw away from the business pursuits. Continue to participate in everything else youre doing with 110% effort and see what honors you can achieve with them. It is by no means too late to tie up any loose ends and to fortify your application further; I think youre a very strong candidate to every school you listed.

@giraffeinatree‌ I appreciate the advice, I am glad you picked up that I started truly focusing on business/econ by my junior year (hopefully this was obvious, I realize I found my interests late). The thing with dropping those 3 clubs…I have big leadership positions in all of them. I am president of Spanish club so I’m definitely keeping that (and I love the club), and volunteering club is the only one I really like that I’e been in since Freshman year and my dream job might involve working with econ-related government agencies since I like helping people…I am open to quitting the role model leadership position at the end of this year though. Thoughts? And should i not bother putting that I founded the entrepreneurship club? (i heard starting clubs is a turn off for colleges, and I’m only the treasurer and I don’t really care for entrepreneurship)

@whiterwalt7‌ I think drop anything that is restricting you from accomplishing more meaningful things with more important clubs. You have a finite time to impress colleges, and however many hours youre spending on the role model club or the entrepreneurship club might be able to be invested elsewhere and to more avail.

I dont think any college would look down upon you starting your own club. Perhaps if starting a club was the only thing you did and you did it your junior year, then I can see why flags would be raised; however you have maintained a track record of extracurricular involvement. If you think you can utilize the entrepreneurship as a vehicle to do relevant and significant things that emphasize your interest in economics, go for it; also consider, however, that the long list of business clubs may also seem slightly redundant, so perhaps consolidating would be ok regardless. It all depends on your particular situation and how you feel towards each club. If you dont like participating in any of them, it will be visible.

2 quick questions: first, should I bother with submitting my 34 ACT(especially given my 29 in science)? Second, I just found out several talented athletes in my school will be applying to Columbia…should I be wary of choosing columbia as my ED school? I would also love to go to Yale, but I thought Yale would be harder to get in early, and I’m not a fan of single choice EA. Thoughts?

Sure, submit the 34, it’s top 1% and it shows you’ve got even skills.
The athletes will be in a different pool and will likely be applying ED on their coach’s recommendation. So if COlumbia really is your first choice, apply ED there. Don’t forget that you’ll need to have your other essays ready before you hear back from Columbia, as odds are by definition against you (even with ED and even with your stats, the majority of all qualified applicants will be turned down…)
For now, identify two schools that are a good fit and admit more than 50% applicants; if they’re big public universities, inquire now and apply in the summer; if they’re smaller/private, start showing interest now (fill out the request info forms, etc).

Columbia - Accepted
MIT - Rejected
Dartmouth - Accepted
Duke - Accepted
Yale - Accepted
UVA - Accepted w/ Scholarship
Brown - Accepted
Williams - Accepted
Stanford - Waitlisted
UMich Ross - Accepted

Def send some music supplements when you’re applying and might as well add Harvard, Princeton, and UChicago to see what happens. Particularly difficult to predict HYPSM but I think you can get into a one or two.

thank you, my parents all telling me to retake the ACT so I can get a 35, but I find this unnecessary given my SAT score…my counselor also said don’t bother sending the 34, so could I hear more opinions on that? gracias

Don’t bother sending/re-taking ACT - the 2370 SAT is all you need.

Columbia-Rejected/waitlist
MIT-Rejected
Dartmouth-Accepted
Duke-Accepted
Yale-Rejected/Waitlist
UVA-Accepted
Brown-Accepted/waitlist

You’re eligible to be a competitive applicant for all of these schools. Just know that you may get into none,1, 2,etc or all. No one can be perfectly sure, but keep us updated!

Hey, a fellow pianist! 'Sup? I put my (very tentative) chances below, along with some tips and suggestions. I hope this is helpful:

Columbia: Waitlisted*
MIT: Waitlisted*
Dartmouth: Accepted
Duke: Accepted**
Yale: Accepted or waitlisted*
UVA: Waitlisted
Brown: Accepted
Williams: Accepted**
Stanford: This one’s just too volatile to ever predict.*
UMich Ross: Accepted

I feel uncomfortable hedging bets on these ones. You could realistically be accepted, rejected, or waitlisted simply based on what time of day your application is read, who reads it, and the content of the previous applications.
*
I feel confident you can get accepted here, but the essays are REALLY important. Use them to your advantage.

Commentary:
I think your ACT score would really add to your application, if you get your science score up. As an ACT tutor myself with 36s across the board, here’s a secret: take a bunch of practice tests of the science section in 30 minutes rather than 35. Get used to working way faster, and then you’ll have plenty of time during the actual test. The issue with the science section is speed, and once you learn to work blindingly fast, you’ll see results improve.

Take more SAT IIs, and ones you know you can do well on. (Math II.) 720 is not a killer score on Chem (says the girl who got into Stanford with a 690 on Math I, hypocrisy all the way). But it probably won’t hurt you either.

Economics research team is cool - augment that in your application.

Thanks everyone! I forgot to mention I tested for Math II and got a 770 @keyboard18
