I know that NYU(especially tisch) is notorious for being cheap with financial aid. But what do they do with the extremely poor? I'm talking about the people with single mothers on welfare who have 2 or three siblings living in an apartment funded by the gov't.? The ones who don't have a dime? >20,000/year income?
Would NYU be understanding of these situations? Does anyone have any financial aid stories?

i would say yes. they really arent that bad. they just have a bad rap

NYU does not profess to meet 100% of need, regardless of what your family's financial situation is, unfortunately, so I wouldn't be expecting that if I were you. There are lots of colleges which DO meet 100% of need so hopefully, you have options at some other than NYU if you don't get enough f/a here. I don't mean to sound harsh at all but if you're in a situation such as you describe, and you know that NYU is stingy, then maybe you should be focussing on a different school.

And no, it's not that they just have a bad rap. The average f/a award school-wide at NYU is a little less than $20,000. The higher f/a packages are those which tend to include the large merit scholarships. At Tisch, the largest I've heard of is $20,000 and very few kids get those. In general, the merit awards available at Tisch seem to be smaller than at CAS, for example, where it's $26,000 (and there are quite a few of those) or the big ones at Stern. But if you have excellent academic stats, were invited to Sat. at the Square, etc., then you might get one of the larger ones. Even still, Tisch is gonna cost you close to $50,000 a year so you might just have to take out big student loans like a lot of kids at NYU.

Don't worry about it yet. Wait for your f/a package and see what it says.

well cas has all the smart people :)

Wait and see what they offer before fretting, and then see if there are any alternatives

Thanks to all and I'm not in that situation. I just wanted to ask about the most extreme cases. Thanks
