Predictions

For all us nervous EDers, post here what you think your chances are, and give three reasons each why you’d be accepted / rejected. (If it’s deferred let’s presume it’s a combination of both factors) I’ll give it a start…

Chances: 50-50

Accept:

 1. International winner
 2. School Prefect and truckloads of ECs
 3. I like my Page 217

Reject:

 1. I used half my Why Penn essay for saying why I want to study business
 2. I’ve got a few Bs (maybe 3-4 out of 20 grades)
 3. There could just be other better people…

deferred - chances 30 getting in, 70 deferred

Accept:
1. International activities and stellar internships
2. Above average scores and really good recommendations
3. Good international relations-business essay for Huntsman

Reject:
1. I 'might' not have what Huntsman is looking for
2. 6 other people ED from our school - 3 have better GPAs
3. The fact that Huntsman picks 20 people, apps increased from our school and internationally.

Chances

50-50

Accept:
1. 7 Time State Accolade on Saxophone
2. 2 Time State Featured Public Speaker
3. Awesome Reccs/Essays
4. Rural School Setting, First to apply to Ivy

Reject:
1. SAT1 scores
2. SAT1 scores
3. SAT2 scores

What were your scores?

Right now I have an 1800(590v 590w 620m) 680 Math1 600 Lit, That is by far my weakest point...

Chances: im 99.9% sure that i'll be deferred. but you never know, so shrugs

Accept:
1. really solid ECs with several leadership positions
2. EC accomplishments on the worldwide level
3. gpa/rank/sat scores are all very solid

Reject:
1. i dont think i emphasized why i wanted to study business well
2. no business background in my ECs, and not much in my essays
3. 21% increase.. no matter how qualified i may be, there are always going to be more qualified students

Plus, I think since my school has no APs, it will hurt me. I feel that at my school, I don't have nearly the opportunities other schools have, I feel that if the adcoms don't look at me in context, I will be laughed at for the most part

jhum111: I wouldn't give you a false reassurance on the SAT scores, they surely would be below the Penn average, but hopefully you have other hooks to make up for them!

yupkixtokki: I don't see why you think you'd be deferred....international honours + solid stats ought to do the trick...and I don't think Wharton expects you have to business ECs, most freshmen wouldn't

Lol I'm acting as though I'm in....I'm doomed

Chances: I don't know

Accepted:
1) Honor roll student from one of the best prep schools in the nation
2) Partner/Co-Owner of a SEC registered hedge fund
3) Played for the Korean National Lacrosse team since age 16 (co-captain in 2004)

Deferred/Rejected:
1) Total of 17 other ED applicants
2) Perhaps comparably weak SAT scores
3) I am an Asian male. Enough said.

Chances: 60 Deferred - 35 Rejected - 5 Accepted (last piece of hope...)

Rejected
1. I'm an international and I need fin aid (not need blind for intls)
2. My math scores are not up there and I want to go to engineering
3. I just don't stand out from the rest of the apps that much

Accepted
1. I am a Hispanic female who wants to study engineering
2. My why penn essay-- how much i ADORE penn!!
3. Overall good ECs, leadership positions, recs, and strong grades

A Korean with weak SATs? I thought that was an oxymoron! On a more serious note, the SEC Hedge Fund and Korean National Team are MAJOR....I guess you're a straight walk through with those....which school did you apply to? Wharton?

haha my SAT II scores weren't stellar... and as you have implied, there are asians with perfect (or near perfect) scores. in fact, many of them. but, i guess i did well considering i've never taken a prep course or did anything along that line in my life.

and yeah, im applying to Wharton... and there are 5 others applying ED there from my school. (3 more to Jerome Fischer and 1 to Huntsman)

lipgloss: I was earlier an aid-seeking international, but have since withdrawn my aid application. I was just cracking some numbers, and I must stress these are all my inferences from data available and based on numerous assumptions, but I arrived at two figures for internationals applying early to Wharton: 9% for aid-seekers and 27% for non-aid seekers. These figures are most probably seriously flawed, but yes international aid is a major factor.

laxman18: Interesting you mentioned Asian male. Are you from India? From what I've understood, our applications are grouped by country and reviewed by regional representatives, so that would mean you're grouped with your 800-800 Korean buds! But yeah, the number of EDers from your school could hurt, though I think the hedge fund and lacrosse are great

Joe Bloggs,

I am a Korean citizen living in both Seoul and Long Island, NY. But, I go to a boarding school in Massachusetts, so I am guessing I will be grouped with non-800, non-Korean buddies of mine, who are undoubtedly very smart. Anyway, I hope my EC's could boost my chances a little bit.

Ahhhh... I have my final exam in less than 2 hours. Must start studying lol

chances: my GC says i have around a 40% chance of being admitted, but i think it's much lower. most likely denied/deferred. anyway.

rejected:
1)my scores are only in the average range
2)i have some b's (but i go to a very challenging high school)
3)others are applying from my school and i'm pretty sure they're better than me.

accepted:
1)i tried to make my application unique (short answers, did not write pg. 217 essay, instead i wrote about when i was on a tv show, weird/unique picture)... but saying mine was unique doesn't mean it actually was.
2)i live in hawaii
3)i can't really think of another one. oh... i think i had fairly good teacher recs (i hope)

7 :) 63 :( 30 deferred

rejected:
1) SAT's
2) Virtually No EC's
3) No Awards
4) interview

accepted:
1) about 3 chances to do EC's, and I have 2 EC's. not that bad a ratio
2) i frickin love penn, and it damn well showed
3) red hair. UR friggin M, boi
4) hurricane Charley...and Frances....adn Jean....and Ivan....and Wilma.

wait, let me get this straight, a female urm applying to engineering? you're in who are you kidding ;)

yea a hispanic female for engineering has an edge..

26e: wouldn't it be sweeeet if we red heads were URMs haha...we should be

and now...
Chances: I dunno and I couldn't make numbers for myself

Accepted:
1. good SATs and SATIIs
2. good essays (i believe), and my why penn was filled with personals
3. should be good reccs (at least 1 awesome one)

Reject:
1. 4 other people applying, one has legacy, and one is val...but im ranked second among them
2. white male from new jersey applying to engineering (redhead should be a URM haha)
3. Not a huuuge amount of ECs..just average..and not too many leadership postions

Prediction: Deferred/Accepted, probably on the border because of test scores

Accepted:
1. Science Awards (Siemens Westinghouse Reg. Finalist, 1st place in state, ISEF...)
2. Online retail business owner (6 figure gross revenue)
3. Four years national + international research at various labs
4. Great essays/recs

Rejected:
1. Weak ACT Score (31) (I underestimated importance of standardized tests and took it only once on the last possible day for ED)
2. M&T is very competitive

"wait, let me get this straight, a female urm applying to engineering? you're in who are you kidding "
