When a college/summer enrichment program requests that transcripts, school profile etc be sent in by the Guidance Counselors. In addition to having your child provide the self-addressed envelope with the postage, can you also do delivery confirmation on it and give it to the GC? Or do you just send the postage and HOPE and PRAY that there is efficiency within your guidance department that these documents are mailed to the respective recipients within the required time.

Thus far, programs we've encountered have requested GCs complete forms and enclose in self addressed envelopes where they sign across the seal and return to students to mail themselves. For those of you whove already gone the college-application route or enrichment program route or know of others who have. What has been the preferred postal method of confirmation/delivery to maintain sanity, when the GCs do the submission themselves.

Sometimes the GC’s include self-addressed stamped cards to confirm receipt - these cards come back to the GC. If the GC doesn’t prepare these cards, you can do so and give to GC to include with the packet going out.

Still, any GC will tell you that colleges do not always reliably return these.

So, imo, the best thing to do is check online (for those colleges which offer this service) which items have been received and which have not. If a school does not have an online or phone system for verifying receipt of each item and completion of the file, then a call to the Admissions office to check is okay.

Do not rush to do this. It takes quite a while for the schools to process the voluminous applications and supporting documents. Give them several weeks and then check - you will still have time to resubmit any missing pieces.

For college apps it is HOPE and PRAY. My S’ high school does not allow you to get the envelopes back and mail yourself. Plus, many schools are beginning to send the information electronically via new services such as, CONNECTEDU. Once you place the paperwork in the GC hand’s it is out of yours.

Keep in mind that colleges know you have no control of how/when the GC and teacher rec’s are mailed. If something is missing well past a deadline, the college may call the HS. They aren’t going to hold it against the student.
