Preferred computer for college work?

So my dad and I have been having an epic pre-college debate about what computer I should buy to take with me to my freshman year at UCI. I'm leaning towards PC (any in general, but any computer is better than what I have now) but my dad thinks that because I'm going to be a theater major, Mac is a better choice. I figure I'm going to have a lot of GE classes my freshman year anyway, so I had better have a computer that handles word processing well. Do any current students have any advice? Also, if anyone has a suggestion for a specific computer that's better than the others, I'd love the input.

I have a Macbook and its definitely great for school. Light, fast, quiet, and just user friendly. handles word processing great and there generally aren’t that many problems with macs. On the downside, I’ve had about 1-3 random crashes on the mac so far (got it last year). However, everything is automatically backed up. Also, the cost is pretty high and it is CRUCIAL to get Apple Care (making it more expensive). It also doesn’t come with Office. However, there’s usually this deal where you can get $100 off a Mac with a free iPod and you can use that saved money to lower the costs of Apple Care and Office. Also, there’s not a lot of computer games you can play =[ (I guess you could say this is good in a way…less distractions). You could probably get a PC that runs just as fast (I find that macbook batteries are better though). With a PC, you can be sure that any computer programs you need for school will be compatible…for Mac’s…it’s always random. PC’s are also cheaper, and you can open them up easily to get upgrades. The one thing that totally sucks about PC’s is that you have to install this program, Cisco or something. It also forces you to install what they call a good anitvirus program if you don’t have one up to their standards. So it’s all about what you’re more comfortable with. The switch to Mac was a bit difficult for me though…since I was using a PC up till college started.

Don’t join the Apple cult. I’ll warn you once.

you can run software named Parallels on Mac and have both Mac and PC computer.

I am a diehard pc fan, but your situation seems to beckon the inferior Mac.

i’d hate to say it but from all that I’ve heard Macs are good college computers. I personally am getting a PC however cause I need one for my major.

And the Pc Word Proccesor > Mac is kinda bull. Word Processing isn’t anyhting difficult for a computer to do so yea…

Macs - Pretty, easy, expensive
PCs - More software, more customizable (The hardware and software), cheaper, Harder to use to their full potential, hard to keep fast
