Preferred Resume Format for Penn

Then you basically just contradicted yourself if you are sending in an extra supplement: "I shall be sending one in as all three of my main activities is pretty uncommon and require some explanation"
That is exactly an activities sheet, when you said before, "You wouldn't need an activity sheet."
Silly goose =)

frivolousthings: I think that you should mention that. It's common, but not THAT common. If you truly are an advanced piano player, make sure that you emphasize it on your app. Because as a piano player, you can't join orchestras or bands to compete for Districts/Regionals. Because I play the violin, it's easy for me to emphasize my skills by just listing those competitions. But what have you got besides piano recitals/festivals? If you've got something better than "Superior," then you should list that. But I think that you should list your piano awards

oh wait, if you apply online, is there a way to attach the activity sheet? you can't send it by mail if you apply online, right?

No. You can mail it. That's what my friends did. Because you have to mail your teacher recs in too.

if anything is significant enough for you to mention, it should probably show up on your app/essay/recs/interview. It's hard to imagine a situation where you wouldn't be able to fit something on an app.

idk, the app doesn't give you too much space. i.e. the activities chart is definitely not nearly enough imo. Also, I have an official resume that I was planning to send in, and it's 2 pages. idk, I'm not going to grad school, I'm just going to be a senior in h.s. but a lot of people have looked over it and said that it was fine the way it was...there was no way it's going to fit into 1 page. (and I didn't include anything small and unimportant....)
are they not going to look at it if it's over 1 page?

yah im in the same situation as juniorinhs...i have a 2 page resume but it is hardly the stuff like: "worked at McDonalds" its mostly my piano competitions...research and listing of other activities. there is no way its gonna fit into 1 page. what to do?

keep it. I've had too many teachers/college students tell me that 2-3 pages is fine as long as it doesn't look like you're dragging what little you have on paper to make it look better - when it actually makes it worse. Keep each description concise. I'm just turning in an "activity sheet" which isn't really a resume, (since the other comments were right: resumes are for jobs, which should be about a page) but you should send in an activity sheet with Hrs.per Wk/ Wk per Yr. Anything that you do for 1hr/week or less shouldn't be included because that looks like you don't have anything else important... I'm looking for a site to put my activity sheet up so that I can show you...

I hear that we have to keep it to 1 page. Take out all the nonsense and limit the description and it should fit.

ehh.. not for all. How can you possibly fit a multitude of leadership, awards, school activities, outside school activities/summer programs, community service, and work service all into one page? Some students have truly outstanding extracurriculars that NEED to shine on their apps to make up for less than outstanding academics/scores. They shouldn't jeopardize their admission by cutting important things out (but again, they shouldn't put up every little trivial thing). If you squeeze everything into one page, it can look messy and unprofessional.

you already have some of that listed on the Penn app...no need to list it multiple times.

but that would just look like you don't want to type them up again because you're lazy. It's okay to repeat what's on the app. It's your activity sheet. It represents you as a person - a supplement to the essay (which usually doesn't really get to let adcoms know you as well because of the topics). You should complete your activity sheet to the wholest and just list the best and most significant on that little table. Most adcoms would just look at the activity sheet for more details to what's on the table.

"Some students have truly outstanding extracurriculars that NEED to shine on their apps..."

It sounds like someone already thinks very highly of him/herself.

that is true but...

the point of the "resume" is for additional information not covered in the app.

I think that if you repeat everything, it will make you look bad.

actually, more like realistic. If i acknowledged the fact that I don't have stellar scores/grades, then wouldn't it be common sense to try to let your extracurriculars/essay/personality trumph over that? if you are mediocre in both things, then what are your chances of getting accepted? it's common sense. And I wasn't just referring to myself. A lot of people are in the same predicament..""Some students have truly outstanding extracurriculars that NEED to shine on their apps..." That's how people feel. Just ask other rising seniors =/

ECs shine in an essay

Definition: A resume is a written document that lists your work experience, skills, and educational background. It is used as a marketing tool for job seekers

An activity sheet is less formal...
and yes, collegebound, I can see what you're saying. If you repeat everything on your essay (like if you just list your accomplishments that can already be found on your activity sheet) then adcoms will definitely be annoyed. But i don't see the harm in repeating on your activity list because you are ADDING to what's on the little given table with your descriptions.
On the table, you only get a space to write your leadership/honors. But in your activity sheet, you can express what you've done..

Then I guess it would be alright to keep the resume to 2 pages max

essays shouldn't even be about your ECs and how amazing you are. It should be something about you that admissions officers never knew. It should be about something important to you (like why you love to knit - hey, there have been amazing knitting essays), not about how you just won class president and how it changed you. Do you know how many of those crap essays adcoms see each year?

can you help me find a site where i can temporarily put up my activity sheet? then i can give you the link...and you guys can help me and we can compromise...
