First post on CC. I'm applying to MIT EA and my issue is that I have my interview next week with someone who seems to have prejudices against Asians and women. One of my fellow classmates, who is a white male, had his MIT interview with the same interviewer and noticed that he used phrases like "those Asians" and "them women." As an Asian male, I'm afraid that this will be detrimental to my application, and it's definitely not the environment I want to head into for my first college interview. Should I file a complaint to MIT Admissions, or should I trust that these phrases were taken out of context? Also, if anyone could give me tips on what to expect/what to bring to the interview, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Don’t jump to conclusions before you meet someone personally.

My two cents.

Well, first of all, don’t complain about your interviewer on the internet if your username is your actual name. You’ve got to be a little more circumspect in the future.

You should ask your friend whether the interviewer said something negative about Asians, rather than just using the phrase “those Asians” (although that in itself is weird.) It might be best to change your interviewer beforehand if the interviewer really did say something disparaging. You could just tell the office that you were told by other people that the interviewer said something disparaging about your race and you’d like a different interviewer. If you call, say that first before you give your name. Then, if they say that you can have a new interviewer, then give them your information. I wouldn’t word it as “filing a complaint.” They’ll get the message.

My username is actually a character from the TV show Arrested Development, and I only used it because I didn’t want to use my regular username on here. Trust me, I’m very wary about the info I put online.

I just talked to my classmate and it turns out he had a different interviewer than I thought he did, so I guess I should have cleared that up before posting on here. Thanks for the replies though.

Would your classmate be willing to call Admissions and tell them about his experience? That’s still the sort of thing the EC office should know.
