this is such an old thread, but anyways I submitted the pre app like a month ago. I got the candidate number and completed the application for nomination like two weeks ago. Though, my test scores are still low compared to the average USNA applicant. I didn't improve my SATs but I did for the ACT: 23 eng 24 Math overall 23. I wonder why they gave me a candidate number even though I have low test scores.

Hey buddy, I'm in the same boat as you are (low test scores). But yeah, after reading over some of the replies here, I'm confused: so not everyone gets a candidate number? I thought everyone who applied got one? Can someone knowledgeable clarify for me?

Oh and in case you were wondering, here are my scores:

SAT
M-530 V-530 W-510
M-560 V-580 W-540
M-550 V-630 W-550

And I didn't take the ACT. At least my scores went up all three times lol (well not including that last math test. not exactly sure what happened there)

the way it works is that you submit a peliminary application on-line; if you meet minimum (emphasize minimum) SAT scores (greater than 550...exact number I am not sure of) along with the other items asked for (class rank, GPA, etc) then you will be issued a candidate number. Not everyone will get one at this point, but you must have one to continue with the application process.

Again, if you SATs are not competetive enough, get some help with them- tutor, classes, on-line.... whatever you choose- take the advice by the posters above... don't settle for what you have now especially if you are still a sub-600 in anything.

Happy Thanksgiving and best of luck!

Darn...a little too late for me. I'm a class of 2011 hopeful.

sighoh well I guess. We'll just see what happens. ROTC will always be there for me.

ROTC is pretty competitive, too. Have you started your application for them?

Yeah I've completed both my Army ROTC and Navy ROTC applications a few days ago and I had an interview the San Francisco State Professor of Military Science and I have a phone interview with the UCLA Professor of Military Science next Wednesday.

With regards to the Navy ROTC, I'm not exactly sure what my next step is. All it says on the website is to just wait.

I just got done with the NROTC app also. My recruiter told me that you'll just have to wait and if you get something in the mail, you probably got a scholarship or closer to getting a scholarship. I think that's what he told me.

i got my candidate number with only a 24 on the ACT. my scores aren't that great either.

first time:
verbal - 26, math - 24, reading - 21, science - 23, composite - 24
second time:
verbal - 25, math - 26, reading - 24, science - 23, composite - 25
third time:
verbal - 26, math - 31, reading - 24, science - 27, composite - 27

i took the sat only one time, pretty crappy.
verbal - 540, math - 590, writing - 510 (but i got a 9 on my essay)

i don't think i'm ever going to take the SAT again. i'm thinking of taking ACT again though, since my highest right now would be a math of 31 and a verbal of 26. anybody know how i stack up with others? i looked at the pdf file of last year's profile. but i'm sure those with low test scores have really great e.c's or something. i know test scores are important, but i'm worrying that my scores are also a little low and not that competative.

For those worried about low test scores, I know someone who got in two years ago with a sub 1100 SAT score (old version), and someone this year with a composite 1720 (M-680 V-500 W-540).

The plebe that scored a 1720 was a....
Two way starter for the state's #3 ranked varsity football team
Captain of the varsity soccer team
State regional finalist in the 200m and 400m track
Freshman and JV basketball
Class rank was top 25 out of approx 400

I would say being an good athlete will work wonders if you have marginal test scores. Get involved with SPORTS.

well I did get an e-mail from Navy water polo...

...but its that one e-mail they send out to anyone who's interested lol.

but hey my rank is good! 4/289 and being a minority must count somewhere.

When I did the prelim application my scores were too low for me to be a candidate. (first SAT 490M 530CR 520W) It was pretty devastating to me that i wasnt even qualified to be considered. But I started to do my nomination paper work and at the beginning of this year I sent my transcript and it apparently made a candidate. So I had my candidate status and thought I'd try the ACT. I bought a book for the ACT and read it and worked on it real hard but i still ended up getting a 24 in english and 25 in math which my BGO told me wasn't competative enough. So my parents and I decided to try out an SAT prep class which I thought was pretty bogus and a stress since I had to put up with school and then also do the Prep Class at night. The class was also pretty expensive so I offered to pay half (but then again what is a couple hundred dollars when you are getting a 200k or whatever education) But it helped me improve my scores ALOT! On my 2nd SAT i got 1230M+V and I just got my Nov scores today and my Math stood the same and my CR raised 30 pts. The things I learned in the Prep Class also helped me on the ACT. On the last ACT i got 29 Math and 27 English.

That was just my problems with the standardized test part...don't even let me get started on the problems I had with the Medical and Physical part ahah.

So what I'm trying to say is don't give up because you get hung up on a few details, do everything you can to improve your chances to get in because in the end all this hard work and effort you are putting in will pay off in the end and if you really want it you will work hard for it.

Good luck guys!

I would stongly suggest to anyone who is serious about applying- and getting an offer of appointment- to any of the service academies to do everything in your power to get your ACT or SAT scores higher. The last thing I would do is count on sports as the "ace" up your sleeve....

while there may be some bending of the scores for blue-chip athletes, if it happens at all it is few and far between-(what it might bring you is an offer of NAPS)....the coaches can only go so far in getting an otherwise marginal student past the admissions board no matter how well they run/jump/throw/swim/wrestle/fence/etc.....

what you have to keep in mind is that an athlete must maintain a minimum GPA once they get in there to even play on the team- and no coach is going to risk a "slot" on someone who is questionable for the season- especially when there are lots of well qualified athletes with great SAT scores standing right behind them on the admission line!

If you are looking for an easy way through this process, there isn't one- do the work, retake those tests, get a tutor if you have to, but bring your best to the table and earn your spot!

If you want this bad enough, you will get it done!

I feel all motivated now to get a higher score. When is the latest time I can take the SAT Test? Is it too late for me already, a class of 2011 candidate?

I feel all motivated now to get a higher score

Never too late. But I believe MOC nominations are closed for class of 2011. So go with what you got if you’re looking for admin to next class. One never knows what lies beyond the ridge.

After googling for a few minutes, I found out the answer, via the USMA website:

DEADLINE: Candidates should check with their Guidance Office for the dates and deadlines for the ACT and the SAT examinations. The final date for taking the ACT for admission to the next West Point class is normally the scheduled February ACT examination. The final date for taking the SAT examination is normally the January SAT test date.

I guess I'm off to take one final stab lol. Bye bye senior snow trip...=(

Actually, scratch that. Yes senior snow trip. I found a way to pay for another SAT test and go on the snow trip. w00t!
