I'm thinking of applying to and attending Duke next year, but I need to decide which of the two schools (Trinity or Pratt) I should apply to. I know FOR SURE that I want to go onto Med School after finishing my undergrad. The two majors I'm considering right now are Biology (typical med school applicant) (Trinity) and Biomedical Engineering (Pratt). I know that BME is very tough at Duke (its consistently ranked top 3), and that I would probably graduate with a lower GPA than I would if I had a biology major. That said, when I apply to Med School, would the adcoms take into account that I had a tougher major at very tough school, or would my GPA be compared equally with other biology majors?

This is just from past reading experience, but med schools do round up for students who went through a fairly hard major/school (but trust me it’s not that significant of a curve). You should keep into perspective that you will be based a little equally with everyone else too through MCAT. If you want to talk about this, include your topic in UMichigan, you’ll get some good, and well experienced responses. If anything GPA (GRADE) is a strong factor for the med school committee.

I think you should major in what YOU like and would enjoy studying, where you wouldn’t mind doing countless hours of tedious work and studying because you know that’s what you enjoy. IMHO, I don’t think you should try to “play the system” by doing what will get you into a good medical school instead of doing something that you really enjoy because then you’re in for a rough 4 years of your undergrad life. It sounds like you would enjoy doing BME a little more than biology, but you’re just worried that your GPA would be lower since BME is harder than biology. But honestly, with Duke’s BME program being so amazing, I’m pretty sure medical schools will know that an undergrad from Duke with a BME degree isn’t going to have a 4.0…
