Premed and Swimming

Case Western Reserve University.

With all due respect to my friends here at CC, if you don’t know much about swimming, then maybe you can’t really be that helpful to OP. His times are very decent for some DIII programs, but they’re not times that make him recruitable at the top of the DIII tier. Not Denison, not Kenyon, not Case Western Reserve. Further if he wants to go to medical school, he needs a fun team where he can compete and can improve, but not one that is competing for the NCAA championship. My girls are swimmers and that made us rule out Kenyon; the team is too fast and too hardcore. My daughter is also pre-med, she can’t swim on a team that will expect swimming to be her top priority. The good news is, his times will be a huge asset to some schools in slower conferences.

There was a swimmer from our town - dad is a MD. Son had tremendous physical attributes with swimming (he is like 6’6" with huge arm span) - I think he swam D1 in Michigan. He did later go to med school but I suspect with the important courses after, like @mom2collegekids said. He continued to swim recreational - and then some of the rec guys saw his name on the wall as a swimming star from that program.

Definitely have to weigh out what is important, most important, how to balance things out.

@SOSConcern, that is an entirely different situation. Kids swimming in top DI programs vs. DIII at an medium ranked LAC. Swimmers tend to do very well academically as a rule. They are tight knit group who support one another. Sure, you have to manage your time well and make sure your priorities are right. But that’s true for every pre-med student.

We’ve had contact with Skidmore as well. I agree completely that Coach Greenleaf is wonderful and I would also recommend reaching out to her if you are remotely interested in Skidmore.

I do think it depends on the school, the program, the coach, the travel, how academics are handled with absences, etc, etc. If the student is strong enough academically along with the demands of the sport.

I would take the advice of @mom2collegekids seriously.

We have lots of experience with Vassar swimming - a really great group of swimmers and coaches. I also highly recommend Skidmore. Brandeis got their team going again (last I knew) and Bard’s team is in their formative years. I’ll bet these schools would love to have you on their teams! St Lawrence is another school to check out.

Male or female? I suppose you are male. Dickinson College might worth some consideration. Do you have schools contact you? I called some coaches for D… She is a flyer… Some colleges will not even call admission for you unless your time is in range…Being able to place on conference. Why do you want to swim if you might not get any money out of it?
