Hey guys,
I’m applying for pre-med to Cornell, and I was wondering, how does pursuing pre-med work there? Which school do I apply to and which should I take? Our college counselor is of no help, and I’m kinda out of my depth at the moment, with applications due right around the corner. Any form of advice/explanations on applying for pre-med courses in Cornell would be helpful. Thanks!
Most pre-meds are in CAS, CALS, and HumEc with a smaller number in CoE. They’re mostly enrolled in those schools because they offer tons of bio majors and science majors that have a lot of the requirements for medical schools covered in the curriculum, but you really don’t need to be a STEM major for med school as long as you take all the required courses. I can’t really tell you which to apply to because they’re all independent and vastly different, so it’s really all about how well you fit into the school (i.e. how do your interests overlap with the school’s interests/mission).
Maybe go over to the premed forum? No one studies “pre-med” Pre-med is an advisory track so you’ll stay focused and get the med school pre-req courses done. You can be a Medieval history major and still be “pre-med” like Indoor says above.
You need to know what med schools want: superior college GPA, excellent grades in pre-req courses (Chem, Org Chem, Bio, etc.), solid MCAT scores, solid recommendations & possible experience and ECs. Then you apply to med school. This applies to every college.
My late 40s friend just sent her last kiddo to college and applied and was accepted to med school! She and her youngest are both Freshmen!
Check out the Human Development major in the College of Human Ecology, they have a track for students pursuing med school: http://www.human.cornell.edu/hd/academics/index.cfm
