premed at IU

2 questions:

A. What's it like?
B. How competitive is it?

A. It's the same as anywhere else. You take your bio, your physics, and your chem. I can't say I speak from personal experience with the actual pre-med major, but as a bio/chem double major I take a lot of the same courses. Some of them are tough, some of them are easy street. Which is which depends on your personal strengths.

B. That depends on how competitive you tend to be. There is an enormous number of students who come into college claiming to be premed. A significant number of them (a quarter to a third) drop out after sophomore year, when first semester organic chemistry kicks them in the tuckus. There are those who take Honors Calculus Based Physics and get hundreds on all the exams, and there are those who didn't realize how serious getting into medical school is and just want to help people (and end up in Psych or Human Biology). So, depending on the set of people you end up with, it can be competitive or not.

Thanks that really helped

Every year, on average, IU has 400 freshman that claim to be premed.
In the end, 150 or so apply.
About 75 get in.

This is the IU Health Professions and Prelaw Center website:

IU does not have a premed major.

Thanks for the excellent info.

I must say that 75 out of 150 students getting accepted into medical school is not too bad.

Would you know the number of students accepted from IUB, Purdue and IUPUI into IUSM?

Thanks

Sorry,

I forgot to ask if the following information are available:

1) What were the average GPA and MCAT of IU “Pre-med” students who applied for medical school?
2) Where did IU “Pre-Med” students end up going to for Medical school?

Thanks
