i've seen a couple of threads about this, but nu has been my dream school for soo long and becoming a doctor has been my dream for even longer. i hear northwesterns premed is really rigorous and competitive (cutthroat?). how hard are all the premed courses really? have you heard of anyone doing an anthroplogy major while taking premed courses? i know that those who do make it through have a good chance of getting accepted at med schools, but how many people initially consider premed and how many actually get through? is it feasible to maintain a 3.6+ gpa and still have a social life? okay thanks just a bit curious :)

I’ve heard about 1/3rd of all initial pre-meds end up applying, and NU has a >80% accepted rate coming out.

okay thanks yup the placement rate is pretty impressive, just concerned over the fact if i could be in that successful third :/

If it is any consolation…some/many(?) in the 2/3 elect to go into a different direction not because they don’t think they could qualify to attend a great medical school program, but instead learn about other options while attending NU. =)
My DD’s boyfriend is a case in point.
I hope this helps.

The list of med schools isn’t that impressive but at least the placement rate is good so you don’t have to worry about not finding a school to attend afterwards.

Hmm that’s interesting thanks for the info

a lot of people are anthropology majors and premed, they have a special focus (i think in biology) for the anthropology department and majoring in anthro as a premed is really common.

premed is realllly hard, im going through it right now at northwestern actually. a 3.6 and a social life are possible. but you have to be really disciplined. as long as you put in the effort you can make it through, but a lot of people in college find out that they cant put up with the work load or dont want to study that hard for the rest of their lives so they drop out.

if you realllly want to become a doctor, you’ll be able to make it through northwestern and do well but i honestly think you’ll do fine if you’re worrying this much, because I was in the same position as you and was really scared so I worked really hard and finished freshman year with a 3.8, while getting straight As in chemistry and math. I hope that helps.

Wow thanks for such a detailed response this is exactly what I was looking for!

no problem, i was going through the same fear as you when i was about to go to nu last year. feel free to ask more questions, i wish someone had told me this stuff too haha.

:p I might pm you out of the blue but seriously, thanks!
