Premed at Tulane?

Anyone on cc who wants to write about their overall experience at Tulane as a premed? Major? Clubs? Advising? Anything related is welcome! Thanks :)

Obviously I hope that current premed students will tell you about their experience so far. But I can tell you that Tulane has a lot of premeds every year, so they must be doing something right. Also the track record for Tulane premeds for getting into med schools is pretty strong, from what I understand. There certainly are advisors specifically knowledgeable about required courses, MCAT prep and other aspects of getting ready to apply to med school. Other than that, Tulane is undoubtedly very similar in its premed environment to all the other similar private schools such as Emory, Vandy, WUSTL, so on and so forth.

So far I have been very impressed with my son’s premed advising. His advisor is keeping track of what he needs to graduate, and what is needed for medical school. He has already been told to start reviewing questions for the MCAT.
Whereas, my friend’s daughter is getting frustrated with the process at our state university and is considering dropping premed altogether. She is a year ahead of my son and she is behind him in premed courses.

Any current students?

I’m a current premed, finishing up all my premed classes this semester. However I’ve taken a non traditional way by doing an Economic and International Development Major. My experience has been good. Premed classes are generally a lot harder than anything else I’ve taken at Tulane. It requires a lot of work and the curve is Z score, so you need to be better than your classmates to do well in most Chem and Bio classes.
Club wise, the premed society is not all too active, but all your classmates are going to be premeds and they will be a great support network. The Science and Engineering student government has been very good, and a lot of members run other premed related student organizations that could be beneficial.
Advising wise, I can’t really comment too much because I’m in a different program that requires different advising than normal premeds.
But ask me any questions you have, I’m quite involved on campus. Mostly non-academic related though. Since I’m involved with housing and hold high up position in undergrad student government.

guhengshuo, could you or any current tulane pre-meds tell me about the research and internship opportunities at tulane?

Tulane has 70%+ acceptance rate into med schools (100% if you’re talking about 3.8/31 or better) but, unlike other schools with similar stats, Tulane will not discourage premeds from applying to med school.

jae, I know you asked for current students so I will just say that research opportunities at Tulane are virtually limitless for undergrads. Faculty is almost always extremely welcoming to undergrad researchers.

Grade distribution?

@FunForAll - I think you will have to expand on that question. What is it exactly that you want to know?

What the grade distribution truthfully is in most of the science courses-what portion of the class is given an A, particulary for courses in the Cell & MicroBiolgy major. I know it will vary from professor to professor, but I wanted to know the ‘scoop’ on how the classes at Tulane are typically graded, particularly for the pre-med track.

I know they are graded on a curve, of course. I don’t know if they use a true normal distribution or what. I know some pre-meds graduating this May. I will ask.

Thank you @fallenchemist
