Premed BC vs Holy Cross

I have been accepted to both and need direction. Probable major Chem or Psych.

Go to “search” and type in “Holy Cross” and you’ll be directed to quite a few postings with all kinds of input extolling the virtues of Holy Cross as a tremendous school for those preparing for medical school: great, new facilities, proven track record of extremely high med school acceptance rates, a long list of eminent physicians who graduated for The Cross.

any college does the basic sciences well (chem, bio). BC has a growing Psych department, if that is of particular interest. For professional schools, gpa+test scores are paramount. Thus, attend the school where you think you can maximize A’s. Most premeds will never make it thru the gauntlet, so attend a college where you will enjoy yourself and where you would be a proud alum.

Both are Jesuit schools that will give you a solid foundation in premed subjects and have good acceptance rates for med schools, and you can’t go wrong with either choice. The major differences between the two schools are really all outside the academic area – size of school, location, sports program, etc. Have you visited both schools? Where do you feel more comfortable?

I have also been accepted to both schools, but I did not get into Pre Health at Holy Cross. I am now face with a very difficult decision. I could major in chemistry at HC. I would like to know what percent of non Pre Health students get accepted into Med School.

I was very impressed with the pre med program at BC. The fact that any student can prepare for medical school is a good thing. They have professors to guide you with course selection during each semester.

It come down to preparing for the MCAT’s by taking all the required science courses at whatever college you attend. I can control my own destiny at BC. Will HC not allow me to take certain classes that need to be filled by Pre Health majors?

I would like to know how my stats compare to other Pre Health students accepted at HC.
ACT 32
SAT 2110
AP Chem 5, Bio 5, Calc. AB 5, Stat. 5
SAT 2 Biology 720, Math 2 750

I am dismayed by Holy Cross at this time. Maybe after attending the accepted students day on April 18th I will learn more. As of now am leaning to become an EAGLE.

Ben:

While I won’t comment on either school, you should know that you don’t need a professor to guide you or “permission” to take pre-health courses at ANY college. Pre-health is just a few courses, which are outlined in every college handbook/catalog. They are typically:

Two years of Chem, one year of English, one year of Bio, one year of Physics. For grad school, you can take them at any time, depending on your major. The point is that anyone can enroll in Frosh Chem and Frosh English and Frosh math (many med schools require Calc). If you earn mostly A’s in those Frosh courses at HC, the prehealth group will welcome you with open arms. If you get B’s or lower, it won’t much matter bcos a 3.6+ is needed for med school.

Thanks Blue for you post. I Understand the process of course selection and requirements needed for med. school acceptance. Ultimately, I control my own destiny. Were you or are you a pre med major? Thanks again.
