DS has an appt with a premed counselor to ask this question, but it's still a few days away. He is in ChemEngr and noticed that software year an Engineering Biology course is required. We are wondering if that class could count towards the 2 biology class requirement listed as "premed reqs". We are in Texas if that matters.

thanks!

I think you may need to ask some TX med schools as well.

Are you saying that your son isn’t required to take “reg” Biology at all?

I’m guessing that this Eng’g Bio class has some kind of ENG course number?

(I can’t imagine that one class would count for two. Doesn’t this class have any kind of bio pre-req??)

Texas med schools require 2 years of Bio. The general rule is : if the school calls it engineering on the transcript, it is engineering. There could very well be exceptions that the Pre-med advisor knows about. The course certainly would not be a substitute for Bio1 or 2 which are specifically required by Texas med schools.

The rule of thumb is that he needs to take a course which is (1) offered by the Biology Department, AND (2) would count towards a biology major if he were majoring in biology.

^^^

And wouldn’t it also have to have a lab?

Unfortunately yes, it’s an engineering course. I guess he’ll have to figure out a way to squeeze the “real” bios into his schedule. thanks!
