Premed Courses

If I am planning to major in chemistry and want to be premed, what courses should I sure to take as a freshman?

first for freshman year, take gen ed requirements to knock those ones out, so that you can focus on your major. A major usually requires 8-12 courses. so you can do it in two years if you just take care of the nuisance earlier

Gen ed courses, Chem 101+102 with labs, Bio 101 with lab.

Check out the Pre Med Forum here on CC…it will give you lots of good information on the process.

Thanks guys!

If I have credit for chemistry from my ap scores should I use it? Can I start bio in the second semester and take only chem 102 first semester so I don’t have to take them together?

If you’re planning to be premed, then some med schools will want you to take upper level chemistry courses+labs to supplement those that you placed out of. That said, if you have AP credit to get out of 101 and 102, I’d generally recommend taking 102H+lab. 102H covers the material in 101 and 102, and introduces you to the level of work that is expected at Carolina. I’ve heard horror stories of people jumping right into 241 and/or 261 after only having had AP Chem.

Taking Bio 101 second semester is fine. Actually, I’d recommend you only take one lab science your first semester at UNC to adjust to the workload.

Thanks so much!
