Ok so I think I'm going to do premed at UMich, probably concentrating in microbiology/genetics. Would it be crazy to take orgo and introductory bio freshman year? With lectures, discussion, and labs it seems like two science classes might be very difficult, plus I'll be taking honors math I & II and the required writing course. Any current premeds? What did you guys take freshman year?

I am a 3rd year pre-med. That is a pretty standard courseload for a first year pre-med. I suggest you do it cause it will allow you to get into the upper-level biology classes earlier, which looks great for medical school admissions. It shouldn’t be that difficult if you just put in the time.

However, there’s no shame in going easy your first semester to get used to the college workload. It won’t hurt you to save orgo for the semester after, or during sophomore year. It just depends on how motivated, driven you are.

Many first year students take orgo and a lab. or you could take intro chem and bio lab.
just be warned that most bio classes are graded with the average aimed to be around a B/B-. This should not be problem if you put the work into the class. An A is very feasible, but some students screw up early in the course and have to put in a lot of extra effort to bring their grade up.

Thanks for the advice guys… I’ll have to talk to an advisor or something in the summer and figure out how to work it all in but orgo shouldn’t be a huge problem - I know it will be very difficult / time consuming but I recieved a 5 on the AP chem test and took a one semester introductory orgo course in high school… I’m mainly worried about bio.

CCRunner - from the course guide it looks as though the sciences are roughly 7 hours per week, with 3 hours of lecture, an hour of discussion, and a 3 hour lab - am I misinterpreting this? If not, is that pretty normal for a science class at U of M? It seems pretty extreme compared to a math or english class that meets for an hour three times a week.
