Premed for a Double Major?

Hi,

I was accepted to the college of liberal arts and sciences (CLAS) at USC with the pre-medicine profession emphasis. With that being thrown out there, I have no idea what class scheduling at USC is going to be like. From my understanding, we sign up at the orientation for fall admits this summer. Is that correct?

More importantly, I need to consider the fact that I must complete the required pre-med courses in order to apply for medical school. Although that may be as simple as taking the required courses for a student majoring in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, biophysics or something of that nature, I am planning to major in physics BS (AND, if possible, business administration BS at the Marshall School of Business). Will double majoring in fields that are not necessarily related to the "medical" majors lengthen the amount of time I will be spending at USC and/or overload my schedule?

I understand that we are provided pre-professional and academic counseling, but I just wanted to get the opinions of the CCers out there.

Finally, what are the typical course requirements for a premed student? I had a hard time finding the specific courses online. (I apologize for my technological incompetence)

Thank you in advance!

is this question too confusing?

these are the BARE MINIMUM requirements for a pre-med student:

BISC 120L organism and evolutionary biology
BISC 220L cell biology and physiology
BISC 330L biochemistry
CHEM 105aL gchem
CHEM 105bL gchem
CHEM 322aL ochem
CHEM 322bL ochem
MATH 125 calculus 1
PHYS 135aL general physics
PHYS 135bL general physics
WRIT 140 english 1
WRIT 340 english 2

now depending on the med school they will have other requirements and also “highly recommended” courses such as:
BISC 320L molecular biology
BISC 307 physiology
BISC 325 genetics
BISC 411 cell biology
MATH 126 calculus 2
MATH 208 statistics

check the latest edition of the MSAR for up-to-date pre-requisites for each specific medical school.

so is it possible to be premed and double major? absolutely. but i will say it is much more difficult if you’re majoring in different schools, like dornsife and marshall. it may or may not be possible to graduate in 4 years, but you’d have to meet with the academic advisors from both schools to figure it out.

if you’re double majoring in BS Physics and BS business, I can guarantee you won’t graduate in 4 years. I think the requirements for those majors are around 70 each, which is already more units than it takes to graduate. After factoring in ge’s and all the premed courses that don’t fall under those majors, you’ll be at usc at least 5 years lol.

Double majoring is generally very difficult if one of them is a BS, just because it involves so many units. I’d go over all of this with your advisor, but if you’re set on double majoring, BA in Biology and BA in something else is probably your best bet in graduating in 4 years.
