PreMed in Missouri?

Hi! Well first off I would like to say that I am hoping to do premed in college, and get into med school. The question is what college to go to? Right now I am deciding between Truman state and Mizzou. I was leaning towards Truman because I would (statistically speaking) be a very high achieving student. Also looking at Mizzou.

Stats:

32 ACT composite
3.7 GPA
APs: jr year: AP BIO 4 AP MICRO 3 (messed up)
Sr year: AP CHEM, PYSCH, STATISTICS, LANG

Lots of extrcrrclrs

Camp counselor at kids camp stricken with cancer or blood disease

Volunteer at hospital for ten weeks ~80 hours total

Stuco School secretary

Link crew leader

Vice president Health and wellness club

Wrestling for 3 years Probably 4

blah blah blah

So what are your thoughts on truman and mizzou and any other university? Thanks!

I love Truman, we have visited twice. You have to be willing to live in a small town and go to a school that does not have rah-rah sports and a thriving college town. If yo are ok with that, I think it is a great place for pre-med. Truman is pre-med central.

I’ve heard only good stuff about Truman. If you’re willing to leave the state, look at Hendrix and Rhodes.

This may not be exactly what you were expecting in a reply, but whether you get into med school is going to depend mostly on what you do and not what school you attend. Every college offers the required courses, and the differences between schools (once you adjust for differences in student ability) probably come not from what the school does but from peer influences. It’s harder to be a serious student at a place where the parties and weekend starts Thursday afternoon. There are many good sources of info on what it takes to get into med school, and I suggest familiarizing yourself with the process now so that you know you are doing the right things thru your college career. Once excellent guide is provided by Amherst at https://www3.amherst.edu/~sageorge/guide1.html

So my advice is visit both schools and pick the one you think is a better fit for you. And be sure to check with your folks to make sure both are financially feasible for you.

If you go to the pre-med forum here on CC, you’ll find Kristin. She’s second year med student who went to undergrad at Mizzou.

What kind of pre-med advising do they have at Truman State?

From what I have been told, Truman has excellent premed advising.

[Pre-Medicine at Truman](http://premed.truman.edu/)

Friend is on the admission’s committee for our state flagship med school. Truman is a major feeder undergraduate school and he says are always among their best candidates.

Look into WHERE the Truman premeds are admitted. Are they mostly admitted to US MD schools? or DO schools?

If your goal is to go to a US MD school, then look into that.
