I've just finished by first semester as a freshman at Cornell, and with straight Bs (1 B+, 1 B-) i have a GPA of 2.98. I don't feel like I've worked as hard as I could have and took some difficult courses (Bio101, Honors Chem215, Intermediate Spanish209, Human Rights Writing Seminar). Does this mean my chosen career path is in a lot of trouble or is this normal?

No, you're not in trouble - med schools give you some latitude during freshman year, especially the first semester, as you get used to college coursework. You still have plenty of time to bring your GPA to what you need for med school (3.5+)
