Premed Michigan vs. Case Western

Hey guys. I’m considering premed and debating between Case Western and Michigan.
I’m OOS and got some scholarship from Case, but tuition is not a main concern.
Here’s a couple of my questions:

  1. Would you say it is more competitive to get into med school if I attend Michigan than Case?
  2. Is it hard to get med school Prereq classes and Pre-Health advisor if I’m a math major?
  3. Is curving down a thing? (if so, it is a HUGE thing?)
  4. Would you say it is easy to find volunteer and other med related EC opportunity at Michigan?
I’m really really torn between the two (location, public/private, vibe, etc.) It would be great if anyone can answer any of the questions I have. THANK YOU SO SO MUCH in advance!

I live near Case Western Reserve so I can tell you that options for volunteering and other medical EC’s are numerous with the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals right next door (literally), and MetroHealth Medical Center not far away. Case has very close relationships with all of these hospitals. Case is not as much of a “rah-rah sports” kind of school (especially when compared to Michigan), so it is a very different environment (also very urban). However, I know many students there and it is a fantastic school for pre-med with lots of research opportunities; its STEM majors are very competitive however (but probably no more than Michigan’s would be). Hope this helps!

Curving “down” is such a misleading term. A curve should be looked at by how many students it allows to get various grades. It is irrelevant if the raw score of the entire class is really high or really low.

For example:

School A Orgo 1: Avg Raw Score: 61%, Avg grade awarded: C (curved “up”)

School B Orgo 2: Avg Raw Score: 90%, Avg grade awarded: B- (curved “down”)

School B still is more generous than School A, despite curving “down”.

As for volunteering and pre-med opportunities, they are numerous at Michigan. I know several students who have volunteered or done research for Michigan Medicine. Also, the pre-med frats do a great job with Med School preparation and socializing.
