OK…it’s VERY important that you ask your parents how much they can spend each year on your college costs. There’s no point in guessing the amount that they will pay. Your amount and their amount could be completely different. Ask tonight and come back. :)

Also, there’s no point in saying 40%-50% because the total cost could be $50k per year or $25k per year.

I had no idea about the previous number, I was just guessing. But they said they can put down maybe 10k a year. They are still paying one of my older brother’s debt and they’re currently paying for my sister. I getting really discouraged now.

OK…It’s best to know the facts now. You’re not the first kid to guess a larger amount. :)

Your parents can pay $10k per year.

It sounds like they have a highish income if they’re also paying for your sibling’s debt, so you may not qualify for any/much aid (financial aid won’t take debt into consideration).

Are they also paying for your sister’s college costs? When will she graduate?

Is your writing SAT a 720?

Don’t be discouraged, I think there are some recommendations for you

Yes 720 in writing. My parents are not being very open with this. They’re not telling me details because they don’t want me to worry about money while im applying. So that was another guess on my part. Sorry, I’m not sure if they feel embarassed or something. My sister is going to medical school and she is in her second year. Forget the 10k figure I didn’t understand my dad clearly. My Dad was referring to a college account he opened up for me with 10k. I thought he meant per year.

So, does that mean he has $10k total for you?

I still think that you need to have some assurance as to what they can pay. IF they can pay it all, they need to say so. If they can’t they need to say that also.

Can you just ask something like, “If I get into a school that costs $50k per year, will you be able to afford that?”

If he says yes, then GREAT!!! You’re on easy street!!! :)

Your parents need to realize that timing is everything. You could miss some opportunities if they’re not being upfront about the money. you said that they’re not familiar with American schools. OK. You need to explain to them that you need assurances NOW of what they can pay so you can make wise decisions.

Pomona is not premed, but it makes a point to not be competitive and it has like a 90% acceptance rate into the top two med schools of a student’s choice

From savings, and that account they said we could afford around 16k total. Wow, sucks being the youngest. I’m applying to UAlabama tonight. Are there any similar state schools that provide the same opportunities?
