Hey everyone,

I am interested in pursuing a physics or math major, on the premed track. I will be playing a D1 sport at the same time, which begins to worry me. I think I can handle the work involved, but I'm concerned about my EC's and applying to med school. How do med schools view playing a sport in undergrad? Does is help/hurt with admissions? I feel that I will have less time for EC's, so how will they view this? Hopefully someone has some input for me. Thanks.

Pacman

You probably won’t have time during the school year to fit many ECs. I managed to do research on top of my (non-D1) sport, but that was it, so volunteering/clinical stuff I had to do over summers.

I don’t really expect playing a sport to affect my application that much… it’s one of the most substantial things I’ve done during college, takes a ton of commitment and work ethic, and it’s not something most applicants have, so obviously it’s going to help rather than hurt. Still I don’t expect it to significantly impact my acceptances, and it won’t excuse mediocre grades or having less clinical/volunteering. But, maybe someone who’s done it and has gone through the app process will know more, I’m no expert!

^ Agree. If you can get good grades, do all of the volunteering, shadowing, and what not, it will show ad-coms that you can handle a challenge.
