Premed

how good is michigan premed?

no one????

You can wait a little more than 4 hours before you bump your own post...especially on a friggin holiday.

Dilksy, you're a jerk.

There's not pre-med at Michigan, you just take a list of classes like organic chem and calc and other things...you can probably find it somewhere.

There is "premed" at Michigan. Premed, like at every school in America, is not a major. It is simply a set of classes one must take in order to be eligible for medical school. The basic prerequisites are Biology, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Physics, but most medical schools require some math (calc or stats), along with a few upper division sciences (biochem, animal physiology, etc.). What you must take beyond the basic prerequisites depends entirely on the medical school you are applying to. You can major in ANYTHING you want, as long as you take the required classes.

So, really asking "how good is michigan premed?" is too general of a question. Perhaps you want to know about the competition? The medical school acceptance figures? The pre-health/pre-med committee/advising? How the specific courses are?

It always confuses me when someone asks "how the premed program is" at such and such school. Premed programs aren't ranked. In my mind, a good premed program has all of the following:

1) Good Advising
2) High acceptance rate (no screening)
3) Research opportunities
4) Strong in the sciences

From this perspective, I would say Michigan has a fairly good "premed program." Atleast, it's been good for me so far.

thanks for setting me up....

how are the meidcal school acceptance figures?

how is the premed commitee/advising?

Can I use ssome community college courses to fullfill this requirement?

http://www.cpp.umich.edu/students/healthmedlaw/med/medappstats.htm

3.5/30 at Michigan is pretty much a guarantee acceptance into some med school.

I'd be wary of community college credits to fulfill your prereqs because many med schools won't even accept these credits. You are better off completing all your work - or atleast your prerequisite courses at a 4 year university.

Does anyone know how good my chances are at getting research opportunities or really anything that involves medicine (aka getting into a better med school) would be as a transfer? I've kinda want to do pre med now...

Research at Michigan is easy to find. Just email the professors whose research interests you. Most likely you will just be volunteering though if you do not have any lab experience.

How about internships?

You can always volunteer at the UM hospital. I cant imagine what internship opporunites you could have as an undergrad in ann arbor. They have some cool study abroad summer programs in the medical field which you should look into. Also, there is UROP if you want to get involved into research.

also- "University of Michigan ranked number 3 in the nation for the highest number of graduates matriculating in medical school in that year."

those numbers are scary dude on that website lol....56% AHHHH...it used to be like 61%..if u dont have at least a 3.4 which is still quite a bit hard, ur chances decrease dramatically....damn
