Prep Classes

What type of prep did you kids do? Did it help? Deciding if I should sign my daughter up for a private tutor, Sylvan or the like and /or let her do it on her own. My daughter got a 30 on her first ACT, just trying to decide what we should do.

If she’s already scoring 30 then a class (usually covers basic information and strategies) will probably be boring for her.

Find a private ACT tutor! In my experience, the best tutors are independent contractors who do not work for big companies, for a variety of reasons, mostly economic. The big plus there is that all the money you pay goes directly to the tutor, instead of the company taking a huge chunk. This allows the tutor to work fewer hours and thus give more individual attention to your daughter.

Google, Yelp and Craigslist are great places to start. If you must go with a name-brand company, then make sure to ask a lot of questions about your tutor, and ask for references and experience. Put your trust in the individual who teaches your daughter, not in the name of the company for which the tutor works.

Plenty of tutors these days also offer Skye tutoring, so you are no longer limited to your geographical area. Finally, there are many free resources available online such as the Quantum ACT Prep series of free math videos.

A class like sylvan typically does not help kids that are already doing well, might improve the score a bit. Yes, private tutor might be a better option for a cheaper option. There are also many prep books in bookstores that kids can go buy and study and practice off of that. Would recommend exploring all options before deciding.

I don’t think a prep class would help her at this point, her score is a bit high for them to help. She should just do more practice. The Barron’s ACT 36 book usually has good tips for how to get the tricky questions.

Thank you!
