Prep for Anthropology: Evolution or Psychology?

I just got my hs senior schedule today and I had the opportunity to pick Psychology or online Evolution. I want to major in Anthro, and I was just wondering which class would be a better prep class for Anthro. Thanks! (Btw, I picked Evolution.....)

Evolution would be more directly relevant to topics in anthropology.

Psychology could be relevant to certain topics in cultural anthropology. I’m assuming it’s a general psych course, so you probably wouldn’t learn much that is directly relevant to anthropology. It could be a prerequisite course for other courses that could be more relevant, e.g., child psychology.

As these are high school courses, you’d still have to take introd anthropology, introd physical anthropology, maybe general biology, anyway as an anthropology major. So, there’s no rush, but more science background is generally better. Unless the psychology course is AP, it probably would add much to your preparation, and, at that, might only get you out of a gen psych prerequisite for more advanced psych courses.

No, both of the courses are standard level.

Do you want to do physical or social anthro? If you’re not sure, then evolution. If you know for sure that it’s social, then psych.

Physical? Evolution.

Well, if I’m majoring in Anthro, I’d have to know about all of the subfields, correct?

I guess it varies from school to school, but I think at my school you pick a concentration within anthropology. You may take introductory courses for each field though.

Rio’s right. It depends on the school.

Generally though, you pick something you want to concentrate on. At my school, everyone gets an Anthropology degree but within that, you can choose to take a bunch of physical anthro and few cultural anthro classes or vice versa. If you’re not sure what that is yet, take evolution. It will help you with basic anthro.

Depends. You can major in just Anthropology, in which case you’d take numerous courses on the different types of Anthropology. Then you can choose a specific branch of it. This’ll all be covered in your intro to anthropology course. After that class you’ll have a good grasp of the different fields. I’d suggest you take evolution.

Thank you all so much! I’m glad I made the right decision!

You can CHOOSE to learn about the different aspects of anthropology (ie: cultural, acheological (sp fail)), but you don’t have to.

I’d go with evolution, as with most anthro classes (outside of the cultural ones) don’t use psychology…

<- anthropology major
