Prep for Prep

If a geek skips a grade or two, do the BS hold it against him/her (in terms of required maturity)?

Gosh…glad someone made this thread. I also have some questions as well.

What’s the difference between a formal and casual dress code?

Do they interview your parents too?

I go to a public school which hasn’t been doing very well on the state standardized tests. I get pretty good grades and I participate in sports and ECs. Would they put the school’s low scores against me? (I’m wondering because so many ppl on CC go to a private school or a top-rated public.)

What questions do they ask you for the essays?

How long does it take for the inquiry forms to get to your house?

difference between formal and casual:
formal: basically a stricter dress code (although it applies more to guys). things to expect: no jeans (ripped)/sweats… blazers, slacks, and skirts are to be expected from a formal dress code.

casual: self-explanatory…

not sure about the parent interview thing, i know that quite a few schools do, but whether every school does it… eh, idk.

they won’t hold your school’s reputation against you, your grades and your SSAT score will account for you.

they ask many different questions on the essays… go look on their websites?

it depends on how far you live from the school, for me, it took from 2 weeks - 2 months. it varies, be patient. (i’d just inquire through the internet though, if that’s what you mean…?)

Now that the 2010 admissions season is coming to a close, can you please post your BS interview questions for next year applicants? Thanks.

Most people would say otherwise, but this is my experience:
Fact 1: To me, interview isn’t as important as most people say. It’s important in the sense that you can ask schools directly and learn more about them, but don’t think that they will judge/evaluate you heavily based on interview. I was asked the same simple questions at every school. You may be nervous at the first 1 or 2 interviews, but after that, it becomes a routine.
Fact 2: I was accepted by 1 or 2 schools where I didn’t do interview.

You can go to any school’s website, they may have list of questions: [St. George’s ~ Questions](http://www.stgeorges.edu/podium/default.aspx?t=101385).

Boardingschool, Thanks. Most people on CC seem to think that the interview is very important. Didn’t you get any out-of-the-box questions at any school? Like, if time travel is possible and you were on Mars, what is the first thing you would do? I would definitely look for my Mom and Dad. :)

do you take the ssats before you start interviews and tours?

The SSATs are offered monthly until January and you can register for any one of the dates, so no, it doesn’t matter when they’re taken in relation to interviews and tours.

Careful, scores are only “valid” for the application year. My understanding is that the only scores that can be used for the regular decision date of March 10th are the Oct - Jan ones. Someone please correct me if I am wrong. It would be best to contact the schools you are interested in to clarify - but wait a few weeks, for their sake!

Agh, okay, I’m going to try to answer a lot of the questions on here.

-Aspect I like about boarding school life
-The biggest change I think would be
-If my parents are ready for it/if it’ll be hard for them
-If I think I’m ready for it
-If I have an outstanding teacher
-What makes that teacher outstanding, what makes an outstanding teacher
-What I do in the summer + last summer
-Types of books I like
-About my family, parents’ occupations, siblings, etc
-What I do in my free time
-Some etc stuff (why I love China, what I do there, how much I keep in touch with my sister, etc. completely spontaneous and personalized, don’t worry bout it.)
-About my friends
-What they think of me going to a boarding school

and I think you’re right, neatoburrito.

Wow… Dapple, very detailed. Thanks and keep them coming. Good luck to you at L’ville.

Correct - you can’t use this terms scores for next year’s applications. Call to clarify.

Also - be wary when someone says they got accepted without an interview. Many schools require one - and even when they don’t - the percentage of students who are accepted without an interview is low compared to those who received one when all other factors are the same.

Some schools waive them due to travel distance or lack of nearby alum interviewers. Others like St. Pauls will do them via the internet (iChat, Skype, etc.)

The interview would not be the skip I would step, frankly, especially if travel is a problem but the Adcom’s are traveling. I’ve had people drive three hours or more for an interview. That is looked on favorably.

Hi Pulsar,
I’m thinking about applying to Choate, Deerfield, Taft, and Loomis Chaffee this year. Also, Choate has a great academic enrichment summer program. They even have an Independent Selective Admission course. It’s mainly a run through of the admission process and everything in that nature :). If you have any other questions, message me & maybe we can answer each others’ questions! Go ‘Newbies’ of 2011!

@lynnie14-Pulsar is gone. I think he has reincarnated into the form of pulsar15. Anyways, what grade are you going to be applying to this year? Sorry I’m not a newbie, but I’m going to be re-applying and if you have any questions about the application process, then PM me!

I don’t believe in reincarnations.

Well then, let me rephrase it: He resurrected.

I’m applying for 9th as a boarding student. Oh and I have a question, I live about half an hour away from Choate, but I don’t live close enough to drive there everyday. I’m also applying for the Ichan Scholars Program. Do you think they would even consider me?

If you’re talented enough, lynnie, then why not?
