Prep School Admission Process

It is different for all schools, but I was told that unless the interviewer is on the committee for your specific grade and gender, she/he will not read your file.

^^Another reason why you shouldn’t take the interviewer’s compliments and warm follow-ups seriously. They may never even read your app or be involved in the decision making.

My interviewer said she is excited to read my applcation, which I am geussing means she’s on the grades board

I was told the following at a HADES school. There are four (4) ratings that your file/application is assigned. A 1 is admit candidate and 4 not appropriate for the school. Your first score comes from the interviewer. If the interviewer likes you, then it is a good start. Your application is then read by three faculty members and you are assigned one of the above ratings. The scores are then averaged. Sometimes you could be reviewed by three faculties members from the same department. The dean of admission gets involved only when there is huge variability (1s and 4s) with your score and for other reasons that were not explained to me. If you get all ones from your reviewers and interviewer you are being accepted.

I know my D’s interviewer didn’t read her profile before meeting her. The interview went very well to the extent that the AO was saying D would be wanted by all schools she would apply and that she would definitely need to revisit and compare, etc. I have lived long enough to know they like her, but we are also humble and realistic enough to see the interview as just an interview. Hopefully by the time they start to review her application, they would be even more pleasantly surprised what a magnificent candidate my D is. In short, I think the interviewer can help but will not be able to decide. That’s why they have a comprehensive process which we are trying to figure out :-)

Is it good if the interview was hold by the Dean of Admission (it was over Skype)?

^AHAHAHAHA me too!!! I was also interviewed over skype for andover, by rebecca lewis, went well, not sure if I should say more, :)

on the last page it said that if the interview goes really well that it could “get you in”: how would an interview be good enough to get you in? a great conversation, making the AO laugh (?)…

I just dont think that’s enough…logically speaking, if there are x spots, and x+y amazing interviews…Y people will get rejected no matter what,

haha that’s a great way to think about it :)

I don’t think an interview can get you in alone but, if the interviewer really likes you and thinks you’ll be fit for the school then they can push to get you in as long as you have a decent application

An interview full of laughs and smiles doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a good one.

I would say that a sign that the interviewer really likes you and will be willingly to recommend you is if they ask what other schools you’re applying to and if your application (your essays, your SSATs, etc.) were strong. They might also recommend you to do other things that would help with the application. You may also hear them say strong points about you.

Speaking from personal experience.

I took a gamble by only applying to Andover, but I left a great impression her, that i was seriously convinced “Andover” was the one, as a result she may push the AO further to accept me, since their loss will not be another school’s gain. Hopefully my mediocre grades will be made for my excellent extracurricular, and math skills.

Siberian, I’m pretty sure every applicant is asked what other schools they are looking at. It’s probably the one question that everyone can count on being asked.

shushgah- I wish yout the best of lucks, but andover is really really selective.

^Indeed, both statistically and because of my fail case, :stuck_out_tongue: If not Andover then I’m going to be home schooled, and perhaps skip supper.

shushah - are you an international student? (random and off-topic, sorry!)

anybody else?? bump!

nah, I’m a NYer for life, however I am also a dutch citizen and travel internationally…typing this post from holland as we breathe…

That is cool shushugah-Did you mention somewhere in the application that you are a Dutch Citizen? That would be a plus!
