hello everyone !!!
i have posted before and have been recieving good news . I am a recruited athlete for army and have been talking a great deal with the coach. As of last night the coach was going to submit my application to the admission board today and write his letter saying that he really thinks i can make an impact at Army as a freshman. He also stated that if everything went well i would have my LOA by next week. But today i recieved an email that my sats are too low and that it would be a waste to submit my application now.. So i plan on taking the sats for the 5th time in january :(. I have strong reccomentdations from a wp graduate that graduated one in his class back in the 80's as well as a retired Col. in the Air Force who is still very respected with in teh Airforce. I have about a 88-90 average in school and lots of extra curriculars. IE debate co captain, venture crew, model un ,criminal justice law society( junior class rep),habitat for humanity , habitat youth united steering committie, and a couple more.... i also interned for my congressman this summer. (VERY LONG POST SORRY) The coach has also suggested the prep school, can anyone talk about the prep school more ? I will accept that if i can not get a direct admission to the academy... Is it popular for recruited athletes to go to the prep school ? thanks alot every one ( i am a senior from a very competative catholic school in Northern NJ)

USMAPS is a great choice for recruited athletes. Typically it means that you need to beef up your academics in either Math or Language Arts (English).

In the meantime, prep like crazy for the SAT. And you'll still have a chance to take the ACT. Some people do much better on one of the tests rather than the other.

Good luck! Let us know how it all works out.

Army2012 - congrats - you've already come a long way and can still make it into the Class of 2012. You said you're going to re-take the SAT in January. I'm a big believer in the Xiggi method of SAT prep -- found on this CC website under the SAT prep section. See

It is a long thread -- over 40 pages -- but start on page 39 at post 575 -- and you'll see why this thread was 'stickied' and gets continual use and reference. It takes some personal fortitude and work on your part, but folks who use it think it really makes a difference in your scores. Remember, only a few more correct answers in any one section can make a big difference. Good Luck!

There is a Dec. 1 ACT and a Dec. 8 SAT...you should be there. You need to talk to your counselor and look on line for all the particulars for doing a "walk in" reg. It's not cheap, but if there is a seat, it's yours. This gives you 2 more chances, not just 1. I think you pay the test fee, late fee, and walk in fee. You need to check on the type of payment and you need to get a paper registration form and fill it out ahead of time.

My daughter is at MMI for prep school this year.

These are my own personal thoughts - she too was like you, good grades in some hard classes (AP and honors classes), she had trouble with the dang SAT's, she took them 3 times her senior year and the ACT's, she was also "on the cusp" of an appointment. She was not thrilled at going to a prep school for a year, but on the way home from the airport at Thanksgiving the first the admitted was she was glad to have this year before going to West Point.

For those candidates who are "on the cusp" of an appointment - prep school is a great opportunity.

West Point can be academically challenging for the brightest of students - there are kids who were 4.0 and 1400 SAT's who struggle. Remember at West Point - you need to take care of academics and balance that with military and physical education and in your case, a varisty sport along with the stress of being a plebe.

A year at prep school - is just that. A year. The benefits are numerous and the drawbacks are - well there are none.

So, retake the SAT's but if you get an offer for prep school and you want West Point that could be the best thing for you.

the website for USMAPS is: Welcome to The United States Military Academy Prep School - Home Page

Try posting your queston on the Prep School Admissions forum. I sure you will get lots of responses from people who have experience with post grad (PG) years at prep schools.

wheres is the prep school admission forum ? I have no problemm with going to MAPS and think it would actually be a positive experience before attending the academy. My goal is the academy so no matter what i have to do to get there. With the Prep School do you automatically get into the academy or do you have to re apply and go through the process all over again ?
