Hi, I'll be going to a popular on the east coast, which i will leave unnamed. I was wondering: what are some popular stores or clothing trends? Do a lot of people wear dresses? They have a casual dress code. Thanks!

Kassidy, I’m going to a school on the East Coast too, a boarding school with a casual dress code as well. I don’t really think it matters where you get your clothing from as long as it looks expensive and polished. I know I got pants for Hollister, a North Face, I have Nikes, just get the popular brand names is what I would think.

However, you can bet that with a tutition as high as my schools I’m not getting a Guicci or Prada back pack. I don’t know if this really helped but I’m feeling the same way too. We need someone who’s been to private school haha.

I go to a private school even though its not a BS. Since you have to wear these clothes everyday people don’t usually wear Prada or Gucci (just for special occasions), they just wear the usual brand names you have listed.

Other Brand Names:
J Crew
Abercrombie
Ralph Lauren (you can get these at Thrift Stores for Cheap)
H & M

Hey. I just graduated from a BS in CT, the only one I’ve heard of with a casual dress code (part of the reason I chose it lol), so I think I know what I’m talking about.

Honestly, just wear what you like, so long as it meets dress code. If you /want/ to look like everyone else, JCrew, Ralph Lauren, and Hollister are good stores. As far as specific articles of clothing go, girls wear lots of cable-knit sweaters, cardigans (often cashmere), polo shirts, ugg boots, birkenstocks, northface jackets, pearls, corduroys, ribbon belts (usually from vineyard vines), sevens jeans, etc etc. Personally, I’ve always thought this “preppy” look was ugly and unimaginative, but if that’s what you like, go for it. If you don’t like that look, though, just dress as you like. You might get a few strange looks (ironically, often from the borders who are too lazy to put on anything other than sweatpants), but in the end people will respect you for your individuality.

sweetpi, where you get your clothes wont mather. All prep school students are different, and I can’t name a brand that they all wear. It’s kinda like asking where most blond people shop.

Just make sure you wear clothes that are decent, clean and well fitted.
Blouse dresses always work, but be carefull with the length and show no clevage.

I don’t know specifically about BSs-- but I go to a preppy pre-prep school, and these are the brands that are popular:

J Crew
Ralph Lauren
Lacoste
Tommy Hilfiger
Juicy
Abercrombie
Lilly Pulitzer
Urban Outfitters
Gap

Some of these are really, so I tend to go to JC Penney, Marshalls, TJ Maxx, etc and get really good deals on these brands.

Wow. I’m assuming most of these people are incredibly rich. But that’s besides the point. I’m more concerned with all these people trying to fit a mold.

Which schools are you all talking about? Because this list of popular brands scares me. I agree with Politica - this seems very unimaginative, undoubtedly preppy, and a bit elitist.

Sorry if I offended anyone.

My school is in a pretty rich neighborhood, but again, not all of us fit that bill-- like me, for instance. So again, I reccomend TJ Maxx, JC Penney, and Marshalls-- just get clothes that you think you’ll look nice in, with the kind of clothes one can buy at those expensive stores as guidelines.

okay edited, i don’t want to offend anyone.

but yeah, agreed with lemons.can.fly. i guess i’ll be the odd one out in doc martens, haha
PS: people wear cashmere sweaters/juicy on a casual, regular basis? i knew BS is traditionally rich, but… :$

Next year when I go to BS, I’m going to wear what I want. I’m not into the preppy look, I’m going to stick to rocking my skinnies and graphic tees:)

Hey there.
So I don’t go to a boarding school (I’m applying this year) but I know a bunch of people that do. Even though I’m sure there are some people that only wear Juicy Couture and Ralph Lauren, everyone I know wears a mix of Urban Outfitters, Forever 21, American Apparel, J. Crew, etc. I’m not sure how preppy your school is, but I’d advise getting a mix of preppy staples like cardigans, rugby shirts, etc., as well as more trendy pieces like flouncy tunics, skinny jeans, and chunky jewelry. The important thing to remember is that as long as what you’re wearing is neither granny-like nor trashy, you’ll fit in fine.

i go to a BS right now and id say try to get stuff from vineyard vines, polo, brooks brothers, etc. you can find some of these brands at like a marshalls or somewhere like that

I don’t know if Andover is the exception in terms of New England boarding schools, but I have seen people wearing Abercrombie or Hollister maybe twice since I arrived this fall. Here, anway, how people dress and what brands they wear don’t seem to factor into… well, anything at all. And it’s not because we “lazy boarders” can’t be bothered to dress nicely. It’s perfectly possible to dress well without dressing expensively. As a kid on full scholarship, I just can’t afford all this Ralph Lauren crap, and, to be honest, I’d probably feel a little resentful if I saw anyone flaunting their wealth through wearing all designer clothes and a Gucci backpack. That’s just excessive and unnecessary.

Do pardon my rant, as I can really only speak for Andover. I would love to be able to speak for other schools and say that none of them have cultures of snobbiness either, but all I can do is hope, unfortunately. What I have noticed is that there is the odd freshman here who accidentally wears something outwardly designer, but I’ve also noticed that they tend to realize their mistake as they get older as catching any senior or upper wearing casual designer clothes to class, with the exception of the odd pair of abercrombie jeans (admittedly subtle) is very, very rare.

Just my 2c, but wear what you want.

Urban Outfitters
American Apparel
J Crew
Lacoste
Juicy
Ralph Lauren

Hmm see that’s funny because here at Andover kids wear what they feel like and don’t conform to a set number of brands because they think everyone else is wearing them

… haha
i am not going to say anything tomthecat. :P

tomthecat: u need to start an andover thread to compete with all the exeter ones out there

My son says the Asian kids at his school are the ones who like to sport the brand names. The rest…not so much.

Sadly, I’d have to agree. Without going into too much detail, I sit next to a kid in one of my classes who I swear to God SLEEPS in button-down shirts and plaid shorts from Abercrombie. So you can imagine how he dresses in the morning for class. My guess is that the sole reason for this ridiculous behavior is that his perception of western “moneyed” culture is that of The Hills and My Super Sweet 16. It drives me crazy.

Hoping411, I’d be happy to! There are already a few out in the wild serving the same purpose as mine, and I’m a believer of moderation, so you can imagine what goes through my mind when I see three “ask an Exeter Student!” threads on the same page. However, I’ll go ahead and be a hypocrite and start my own. Maybe I’ll theme it differently by trying to appeal for those other than applicants to 9th grade as I, myself, am a new Upper (11th grader).

wal-mart ftw.
