I am really interested in attending a prep-school for atleast one semester, mainly out of curiosity rather than need... My high school gives one the best programs in NJ, but still the idea of attending a prep-school is luring for whatever reason.

My one problem is that my parents probably won't allow me to attend private school ever... Unless, perhaps I pull of atleast 70% scholarship, but thats just me guessing. I was just wondering how i should talk them towards it, and whether the experience/prestige is even worth it in my situation.

Currently, if I was to attend I would probably attend a school deemed "prestigious" purely because those are the schools that really got my curiosity going. As I said i'm more in it to experience a new environment. Academically, I think i'm doing very solid and am in a good situation unless their is something that I am missing that would be available in a prep-school.

Whats your take on prep schools? Is it worth the experience, is there anything that I might find worthwhile being part of?

I don’t know… Prep schools do bring a lot of new experience. They offer opportunities that can’t be found in most public high schools and they definitely have a big impact. But to go there just to “experience a new environment” “mainly out of curiosity” seems like a small reason compared to taking such a big step, if you know what I mean. Maybe you should attend an open house or something first; they’re meant to give you a chance to sorta try it on.

Why not start out by trying a summer program at one of the schools you’re interested in?

There are several threads here that discuss them (do a search), as well as a board devoted entirely to summer programs. It seems like a summer program would be a great way to get your feet wet! (And I don’t know of any school that’s going to accept you for a semester only, so a summer is probably as close as you’ll get.)

I can’t think of any school that will allow you to take it on a test drive for a semester - especially if you need financial aid. If you want to “experience” boarding school, find one with a good summer program.

i agree with dapple to not just go for a new environment because it is a long and tedious process to apply and then probably takes a lot of dedication and hard work once you are there
