I’m just wondering what the prep soccer league is like? Do most players come from club teams? How competitive is it to make it?
Thanks xx
The competitiveness of prep soccer varies substantially depending on the school. I know the most about Andover Soccer as my son entered as a lower and is currently as senior. He played on the varsity team all three years. Andover has 3 JV teams so making varsity is not trivial. Most of the varsity players have played club soccer, some played ODP, and some played for Academy teams. Most years the 2-4 top varsity players are good enough to play D1, pretty much anyone on the team could play D3.
Thanks so much for the reply @redsoxfan18
Did you go through the process of emailing the coaches with game tape and all that stuff?
We did email and meet with coaches. I tried to get some game video but that did not work out. I did it personally and it was very amateurish. Luckily we live close enough to three of our target schools that coaches were able to come see my son play.
Roofus, our child is a club soccer player who will be playing soccer in the ISL (prep school). Like any other league, some teams are competitive and some are not. From what I can gather, Lawrence Academy has become a big soccer destination, with NE Revolution Academy players playing there. I believe they also won the ISL championship, Making a team such as that would probably be a bit difficult, unless you were truly gifted. There are schools lower in the ISL standings which are considered a more difficult admittance, and making one of their teams would still be a challenge for a non-club player, but if you are a decent player, you should have a shot.
We contacted coaches and sent game video. We also got recommendations from our child’s coaches, and had a soccer bio of achievements. If you want the coaches to consider and push for you, you will however need to be a standout soccer player. If you are not, you will have to find a way to get admitted without soccer, and try out for the team in the fall. Even then, of course your academic record should be strong. Just my opinion.
@SimpleSimon thanks for answering my questions!
