Prep Schools In The News & Media

  • -1/3 of the cost for day students. Pretty wild. It’ll be interesting to see if this has any measurable impact on applications, FA, etc.

“Emergency responders eventually found the source of the spill, which the fire chief said was less than one gallon of ammonia.”

Bummer.

Fun read with your coffee this morning! This should be good…

Fun!

Fascinating. An effort to eliminate high school grades and replace them with something more…interesting. I’d not heard of the Hawken School, but the HoS worked in admissions at PA and Cranbrook:

Is this an attempt to turn objective grading standards into subjective opinion evaluations ?

If so, why not just add a space for comments about each student next to the students objective letter or numerical grade ?

To a far lesser extent, don’t letters of recommendation address this area of subjective evaluation of a student ?

It doesn’t seem it. Did you read the article?

Yes & no. Read about one-third, got bored and skimmed the rest.

That’s what my kid’s school does.

Actually, the comments section can get rather detailed on the report card.

I heard about this a few weeks ago through teacher friends. I am so confused by the reasoning for this. That people “outside of the school” might have an impact on school plans seems like such an odd excuse. Regardless of how you feel about Hannah-Jones, this was a misstep by Middlesex and, IMO, shows how a HOS can impact a school so very much. When people ask why Middlesex is not more respected in this area, it’s things like this that come to mind. The kind of walking the line between all things and not having a real identity.

I agree the stated rationale doesn’t hold up to scrutiny at all. Bizarre.

Right? Like the residents of concord would come out to protest, laughable. You’d have so many liberal concord moms protecting the school first while also trying to get Hannah-Jones’s autograph. :joy:

I can’t believe I am posting this, but….Choate Day is coming up in a couple of weeks :cocktail:

My first thought was a big donor or VIP (Very Important Parent) made a phone call…

I guess that’s a possibility. Sad to know that the administration of Middlesex has no backbone.

Pretty sure students were not happy either. At my tour a few days ago, walls were plastered with tweets about this. And my tour guide was talking about how they invite many people to speak with different backgrounds :joy:
