Prep schools, late applying

Im currently a freshman looking to go to boarding school for sophmore year. I have all As and Bs, a 3.5g GPA. I also play hockey , which i compete with thebest in the northeast. I am also playing on a very select U16 AAA showcase team. I know this is very general but what do u think my odds are of getting into taft, groton, hotchkiss ,choate, or salisbury, and any schools you think i should aim for? Also i know i am late applying, it will probably hurt my chances of getting in but i really would like to go next september.

bumppppppppp

Some things to think about:

Do you need FA? It’s much more difficult to get FA if you are a late applicant.

Are you actively communicating with coaches at the schools you are interested in? As a late applicant, they would be important, if not vital, to your chances for success in getting admitted.

The schools you listed are all very competitive, but if you have the “academic stats” needed to attend the schools, and the coaches really want you and “go to bat” for you with admissions, you might be successful.

Good Luck! You never know what might be possible if you don’t try . . .

You should contact the schools you want to apply to, just ask them whether or not you can apply right now.

It’s also a good idea to look at this page [Search Boarding Schools](<a href=“Boarding School Search Results”>Boarding School Search Results)

It lists all the schools with rolling admission dates, it’s much more likely to get in there than at the schools you mentioned.

If you are applying after the deadline then you can only be accepted if a spot opens up.

But, at some schools (including at least one HADES school I know of), this just puts you in the same category with the waitlisted applicants, and you could well end up being selected for admission ahead of the waitlist applicants!

As someone suggested earlier, contact the coaches!

Salisbury is your best chance out of the schools you listed. Dodger is right, you need to contact the coaches asap. You should also consider Berkshire. Did you take the ssat?

i have contacted all the coaches, i also contacted the gunnery and they seemed to express interest, could i possibly go to a middle of the road school and then transfer as a junior to one of the top?

Don’t do the middle of the road thing. Find a school you want to graduate from. I’m transferring from a private school and they really don’t want to let me go. I just hope they gave me good recs. You know what I’m saying?

You absolutely could. Should you? Probably not.

Consider what’s involved in making a successful transition to a new school. It takes a while, but you make friends, get to know your teachers, establish a good relationship with your coaches and then . . . whoops, time to start all over again the next year!

Factor into that the time and stress involved in putting together your BS applications - testing, essay writing, etc. Do you really want to take all that on your first semester in a new school?

Finally, how well are you really going to fit into your temporary school when you know it’s only a stepping stone on the way to somewhere else?

If you don’t want to go to any of the schools you find you might be able to get into now, then I’d recommend staying where you are and doing things properly next year.

what about westminster, they have a good hockey team, how hard do u think it would be to aplyto them late, from what i look they are rolling

westminster has great hockey… but again as you told me before hockey is your only EC and that will hurt u majourly because most people have at least 3

The main reason I didnt do many EC’s is because I did not know that months later I would be applying to boarding schools. Also I spend a ton of time on hockey, leaving little time for much other than homework. I think though it might hurt me a little bit, it is dramatic to say that not having tons of EC’s will ruin my chances. I know they factor in the interview, grades, sports, and recomendations just as much.

Hey dude i play AAA bantam major hockey in connecticut and I also applied late to hotchkiss. They said it wasn’t a big deal, however I’ll give u a heads up. I have heard from coaches that the admissions office sees that you play hockey, but look at it as any other student that does EC’s. I think that they don’t realize how good NE prep hockey is. It seems like they value it as much as if you played the piano, so keep that in mind come March 10th.

I am not saying it will ruin your chances but since your not being a hockey recruit it will bring your chances down,
do you play any other sports?

@hockey6, Because of your high level of play, you still have a great chance of being considered w/ the push of a coach. Don’t worry about the ECs. You may want to add in your application essays that you intend to join x,y or z EC groups in BS. Perhaps this is one of the reasons you want to join a boarding school in order to be a more well rounded student. Get what I’m saying?

have you at least taken the ssat?

ya i definately would do more EC’s if I was at boarding school just because i wouldnt be playing hockey durin spring, at least i dont think so…

Financial aid would probably be a must and I know that the top schools will have little to no aid to offer to a late applicant, what about some of the less popular schools, do u think they would give financial aid to a late applicant?

The smaller schools don’t have funds to match the big ones so I doubt it. I looked at a few schools late myself and only one of them was able to let me apply with FA, I barely made it, they reviewed the last FA applicants on Friday so that was just plain lucky, most schools have already made their FA decisions.

I live really close to delbarton, i dont know if you ever heard of them, but i am thinking i would have better odds getting in there compared to all of these other schools because they arent boarding and have less applicants
