Prep

Have any of you read the book Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld? I saw that it had gotten great reviews so I bought and read it, but I was kind of disappointed. Was I the only one with this reaction?

Haven't read it. I watched Walk the Line last night. I was disappointed by that.

I haven't seen that. I'm planning on watching Capote tomorrow.

i read it. i loved it. i thought it was the most realistic thing i ever read - it seemed like a diary, and a very profound diary at that. more than once i read some thought of Lee's, and nodded and thought, you know, i've noticed that, or yeah, sometimes i think that too. i loved how insecure Lee was - a lot of ppl had problems with that, but i recognized Lee as a typical teen - she has tons of insecurities, small ones, that many ppl have but will not admit. and i liked how there wasnt really any plot, no huge, exciting heroic thing that Lee does like in typical fiction, after all, this is about high school, and how many times in high school do you get stuck in some tv/soap opera sort of situation. mostly high school is boring, with a few little adventures here and there. for example, i liked how while her sophomore year was so short, her junior year was super long. curtis sittenfield didnt feel the need to have everything in a proportion - after all, sometimes one year is pretty uneventful, while the next is packed.

i just found the end chapter XXX scenes a little too - graphic. its realistic enough, but ah well, i thought i was a bit too young to read about things like that. some of my friends had to read prep for english and of course, thought it either innaproppiate or amusing.

Prep is really not a realistic portrayal of boarding school.

try PLedged about sororities

that is eye popping

no i meant realistic as in the narrator's feelings, the way the teens talked, and acted.

but as for the realistic-boarding school thingy, i wouldnt know, but the author DID go to boarding school (groton) and now teaches at a prep school. only difference from her and narrator was that lee fiora was on financial aid and the author was not. i think most of "prep" are based on her experiences.

Hands down, best book ever...

The Lorax

I read Prep and I agree with Martha that I felt that it was a bit of a let down. I did notice a lot of similarities between Lee's school and my boarding school. I thought the characters were rather stereotyped.

I bought it because of the reviews. And I hated it!

Just a stupid shallow girl who complains about everything and she's so self obsessed, with no self confidence, and ughh. So many insecurities.. just get over it loser. I dislike people like her.
Hated thebook.
