<p>Hiya everyone I'm new to College Confidential. I was wondering how intensely prospective art students are preparing for their art portfolio. I don't know if i should be worried or comfortable with my pace of making my pieces; i read somewhere that a student is usually satisfied with one out of every 10 pieces that they make for their portfolio, is this ratio accurate? i'm planning on applying to SVA and Pratt Institute. thank you!</p>
<p>hmm...i never really looked at the ratio of what i liked and what i didn't...i usually disliked more than liked...
anyways, just make sure you have a good number of drawn/painted from life examples (5 or more), some figurative, some realistic (shows technical skill), and ones with good compositions and use of the E and P of design.
and are you planning on making all the pieces this year ("pace of making my pieces")? that's a lot of work, and they probably won't be qualities. draw from past years (the strong ones) and add more as you go.</p>
<p>I am not artist myself but I would recommend you to include a variety of different art works: 3d, 2d, photography, photograph of sculpture, etc..</p>
<p>yea i have way to much... stuff. I go to a high school for the arts in which i have mandatory art classes from 2pm-5 so i do have over enough pieces to make a portfolio, but my teachers have been telling me that art schools would like to see the art you've done within a year of that you apply. </p>

<p>another thing; when schools give you a range (say 12-20) does it hurt your portfolio if you submit the minimum 12 or the maximum 20?</p>
<p>Don't submit too few. It will show that you are a slacker.

<p>@iisangheh: I’m a senior this year, too and I’m applying to architecture school. As of right now, I have 2 sculptures, one painting, and about 5 drawings that I’ve made in my design classes, but that’s it… So if you’re worried about being behind or anything, you’re not the only one 
I’m going to start a sketchbook and try to do some paintings (or maybe an oil pastel drawing) because I’ve heard that those kinds of entries are best for an applications portfolio.</p>
