prepare for PSAT

What is a good way to study for psat? Do you study them as the way you study for SAT? Are there any study materials, like books, etc.? Also what are the differences between SAT and PSAT? Sorry about my ignorance. would appreciate any input.

The PSAT stands for “Preliminary SAT.” It’s also called the NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test), because the test is used by the National Merit Scholarship Program to determine who is eligible for a scholarship (basically, if you get a certain score or higher, you move on to the next “round”).

The PSAT’s format is very similar to the SAT.
2, 25 minute Critical Reading Sections

2, 25 minute Math Sections (with one all multiple choice section and another that has
multiple choice and “grid-ins”)

1, 30 minute Writing Section

Unlike the SAT, there is NO essay.
Scaled scores are comparable to the SAT’s, but divided by 10 (i.e. the highest score is a 240, not a 2400). The questions are generally identical in difficulty, if not slightly easier, than the SAT (though some find the PSAT harder), but the scale is usually less generous. While some think the difficulty is slightly easier than the SAT, many find that their SAT scores far exceed their PSAT scores (even though the College Board claims most people’s SAT scores fall within +/- 30 points of their PSAT scores). The fact that most people prepare much more vigorously for the SAT than the PSAT probably accounts for this phenomenon, though.

One can prepare for the PSAT simply by preparing for the SAT (i.e. familiarizing oneself with the format and question types, as well as taking practice exams out of the Blue Book). In addition, the College Board offers dozens of previously administered PSATs in their online store, for about $3 a test booklet. Online practice questions can be found here.

The College Board also publishes every year a practice PSAT booklet every year that has some prep material in it. Most students can get this from their school and answer explanations can be found here.

Good luck on the PSAT!
