I have AP Lit and Lang next year, and I would like to know some good books to read over the summer. I have gotten out of reading, but i want to start to prepare for the class. Any good books?

The answer is always Heart of Darkness.

My advice for a summer reading list is to try for a mix of books - don’t just pick your favorite genre, topic, or author! The AP likes style variety.

For example, read the Aeneid, Hamlet, Paradise Lost, Pride and Prejudice, Frankenstein, Our Town, Brave New World, and Waiting for Godot (or any other combination of comparable books). Also, be sure to include a wide variety of poetry in your summer reading, including Donne, Frost, Wordsworth, Byron, etc. The AP Lit exam also usually includes a very modern poem (usually by a living poet), so be comfortable analyzing modern verse.

I would read books that have been known to appear on the AP test A LOT and that can be applied to many open response prompts.

Heart of Darkness, Crime and Punishment, Wuthering Heights/Jane Eyre, Invisible Man, etc

Every book I read this year in my AP Literature class is perfect to use on most AP essays. We read Frankenstein, The Kite Runner, Long Day’s Journey Into Night, MacBeth, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, Streetcar Named Desire, and A Tale of Two Cities.
