Preparing for class

I'm sure someone's going to make fun of me for this....

How "prepared" do most professors expect you to be? I'm taking Calculus II this fall after having gotten a 5 on the AB test, and in reviewing now, I'm curious how well I should know the material. Do professors usually review concepts at the beginning when a class is a continuation? Are pre-tests common? Or do they just jump into the material and assume you're caught up enough to understand?

What about for classes that we should have some knowledge in? I'm also taking Chemistry, which I took in high school... but my teacher got sick at the beginning of the year and we had a long-term sub who just made us memorize the periodic table for the rest of the year. As such, I'll know next to nothing walking in. Is that alright?

It depends, in intro classes it doesn’t really matter how much you know, because they’ll cover pretty much all the basics. There aren’t pre tests from my experiences, and they should be willing to help you out if you’re behind. The professors don’t expect you to know everything, just the basics of what you’re studying. You already know the basics of calculus, so you should be good in the math class, and unless you’re taking advanced chemistry, it’s probaly an intro classs.

I’m skimming through some review books so I don’t get caught off guard.

When I started calc II, my instructor did a whirlwind review and gave us a bunch of review problems for our first homework assignment. That was really all I needed.

As for the sciences… Well, usually in intro classes, you learn the same things that you did in high school except with more details. If there’s any completely new material (for example, you might not have covered much physiology in high school biology), it’s not usually the first thing you learn.

if it’s a general class that students have to take then he will most likely review material from the previous class you had to have taken. You gotta remember, just because it’s Calc II it doesn’t mean everyone in the class had the same professor teaching them Calc I or that they even took Calc I the previous semester. So they usually go over quickly some of the material. This happened in my stats classes. In Stats II we had to spend like 3-4 classes going over material from Stats I. Professors don’t really expect anything out of their students. Just show up. And whatever they teach you is what they expect you to know for the tests.

Thank you guys! Actually takes a huge load off my mind, so now I’m not going to go into panic mode because I can’t remember some stuff from Calculus. :)
