Preparing for the fall

Hey everyone,

It’s been quiet on the board for a while, so I figured I’d just check in and see how everyone is doing. We have sent out all our decisions for the Fall 2012 class (except for some transfer letters), and we’re looking forward to introducing our new incoming class to our campus when the fall gets here! In the meantime, I know it’s a time for lots of planning and packing and asking all sorts of questions, so I figured I’d build a board here dedicated to that. Let me know if you have any questions about coming in for the fall, and I’ll answer them or find out the answer from someone else on campus who can help!

Have a great week!

Hi Nicole,
Champlain appeared to be more competitive this year. Do you have any new admittance stats for the college?
My son is looking forward to attending. Are kids allowed to bring a car after freshman year?
Collegemom350

Hi Collegemom350,
You are correct that Champlain’s applicant pool was significantly more competitive compared to last year! We believe that this was largely in part to more wide-spread awareness of Champlain, due to a combination of increased fall recruitment travel, Champlain’s appearance in new review texts such as The Princeton Review, and quite a few news stories that have come out about our school over the last year.

We are starting to see the stats for our new incoming class, and they have increased over last year’s class. Our average GPA of an accepted student was around a 3.2 out of a 4.0 scale, unweighted. The average SAT was about a 570 on each section; the average ACT was around a 25 composite. In addition, we saw an increase in the amount of accepted students who had upper level courses such as honors, AP, or IB coursework.

We’re looking forward to having your son here! Will he be attending any of the pre-Orientation Summer Launch programs? I will actually be chaperoning the Roller Coaster Extravaganza one! :)

First year students can bring their cars to campus, but are required to park in the satellite lot down the street, Gilbane. There is a shuttle that runs back and forth between Gilbane and campus, and parking there is free of charge. Students can have their cars on campus during some evening hours and on the weekends.

I hope that helps answer your questions! Please let me know if there’s anything else I can share with you!

collegemom, I was talking to my son about how he got around last year at Champlain since he didn’t have a car. He said he used the public buses and went to the mall several times. Of course, everyone just walks downtown. He also shared a taxi to get to the train station, but it’s only a ten minute ride to the train or bus station, so no big deal to pay for a taxi without sharing. There’s also a Mega bus that books up quickly that goes to NYC and Boston. I guess a car would be handy if we lived within a couple of hours, but since parking is not that great, we are not encouraging him to take one up for awhile yet.

BTW, my son has signed up to move Freshman in, so maybe our boys will meet!

Hi, How do we find out info on housing. Son picked 3 potential housing options, but would like to know dimension sizes for items that he would bring up? Thanks!

Hi maxmittens, you’ll be getting information about the dimensions for bedding in one of the series of three booklets you’re receiving over the summer. I’m not sure which one of the three booklets it is, but I know one of them should provide details! In general, though, I can tell you that the beds are twin size, extra long. I’m not sure about what other dimensions for things you’re looking for, but a lot will be explained in those booklets. Otherwise, I’d wait to hear from your roommates before picking up too much big stuff.
