A few days ago I asked how much it would hurt my son when he takes the SAT 2 because he had skipped Trig (Pre-Calc) and went straight into AP Calc AB. He is getting an A+ in the AP Calc AB class as a sophomore so he is pretty good at math. I want him to take the SAT 2 math at the end of the school year because then he will be studying for the AP Calc AB test and the SAT 2 at the same time. I figured he can study Barrons SAT 2 Math to make up for any Trig he may have missed and Princeton AP review as a review while still taking Calc. For those of you who took the SAT 2 does this sound reasonable? Should he take the SAT 2 before the actual SAT? Thank you

How has your son “skipped” trig? That’s a pretty integral part of calculus (no pun intended), and you have to be able to do more than memorize the derivatives of each trig function to get by in it.
That aside, your question is a little ambiguous. Is your son preparing for the AP exam (which is not until May unless he is taking it outside of school), the SAT II (not sure if this is even a test), or the Math 2 SAT subject test? The Math 2 subject test will require him to know trig fairly well, but for the most part it’s still lower level math. I would recommend any book that teaches trig as a part of his study regimen, as he will need to know things like the law of sines, law of cosines, double angle formulae, trig identities, etc. for the trig questions. Besides that, if he is smart enough to take calculus as a sophomore, he shouldn’t have anything to worry about on the test!

I would suggest you to get some basic books about Trig before going on to Barron’s, since Barron’s only REVIEWS you NOT TEACHES you. And as Esssse said, if your son is taking AB Calc during his sophomore year, then he can probably understand trig pretty easily.

Thank you for answering youngbin and esssse. My son was able to skip trig because at the end of Algebra II the kids at my school (I teach there) are given a test, if they score high enough they go straight into AP Calc AB. Esssse, he is studying for both the AP Calc AB test and the SAT 2 Math subject test. Thank you again both of your for your answers, it was helpful.
