After looking at AP Biology practice questions (and even SAT II Bio questions), I'm starting to realize how watered-down my "Honors Biology" class was. As a pre-pre-med hoping to be accepted into Ivy League schools or equivalent, I decided that I should prepare myself for the AP Biology exam. In doing so, I've realized how much I enjoy the subject, so I've decided to participate in the 2014 USABO.

I've already decided to order the giant Campbell and Reece Biology (8th Edition), and I'm considering Raven's Biology of Plants. I've been told that Raven's doesn't help much on the open exam, but, if I qualify for the semifinal exam, there won't be much time to get the book. Do you think I should purchase Raven's Biology of Plants, and are there any other resources I should consider?

Now, I plan to read Campbell's over the summer and take a respectable amount of notes, but I won't be able to devote the whole summer to biology because I'm going to PROMYS from June 30 - August 10. That gives me approx. a chapter/day for reading Campbell's. Fortunately, I have strong memorization skills, and I've been told the open exam focuses on a lot of obscure details.

If I intend to qualify via the open exam and would like a good chance of being Top 20 from semifinals, how much should I intend to study during the school year? (Please don't tell me it's relative!) Also, is there anything else I should study (e.g. taxonomy, Raven's Plants, etc.), and are there any studying methods I should consider?

--------------------About Me--------------------
School Rigor: Home-schooled; taking several AP courses
Related Courses: Honors Biology, Honors chemistry (may supplement with AP preparation), Mathematics (through multi-variable calculus), Human Anatomy and Physiology (next year).

Fortunately, I'm the kind of person that, once dedicated to something like this, will study for hours on end and memorize 1000s of facts until I feel prepared for the competition. The reason is simple: I'm extremely competitive, and I love math and science!
