Preparing from now ... what to do and the don't's

Hey everyone, so the GRE is sorta scaring me right now. I'm transferring to a university as a Junior next spring, however as a psychology major I want to start prep work for the test as soon as possible.

From your experience what would you suggest to a future GRE test taker to be successful on the test?

Psychology major, I assume I'll probably need to do extremely well on both verbal [ for research purposes ] and quantitative [ again for research purposes (statistics etc..) ].

What books, CD's, etc... do you suggest I purchase to start studying? When should I take the GRE? I estimated that I'll finish my undergraduate degree in Psychology the end of 2013. With a desire to apply for graduate school right after graduating with my BA.

Thanks for your suggestions, help, advice in advance!

My biggest suggestion is to actually study. When I took the GRE I glanced at 6 yr old Kaplan book and Google for a few hours and then walked into the test.

For the verbal section Baron’s word list seemed like it would have been helpful. As for the math section Google was a good refresher. (Just review math up until algebra or so)

ETS’s official math prep guide is a great book for revising your concepts. It’s available on their website.

For verbal, depending on the time you have for the exam, my recommendation is to read quite a few books in addition to the wordlists (I personally did not use wordlists).

I studied the “Official Guide to the GRE Revised Test”. I think this one helps a lot with the math. Used the Princeton Review book as well. That one’s more helpful for verbal I think.

Took the GRE today and got:
170/170 Q
160/170 V

Good luck studying!
