I will be starting as a freshman at a liberal arts college this fall but will most likely have to transfer for financial reasons. I looked on the Umich transfer page but couldn't find any suggestions in terms of what courses I should be taking next year. Since I will be applying after only one year, should I try to take community college classes this summer as well? I was originally wait listed at U of M this year, and my HS GPA isn't that great while my ACT scores are just mediocre (28 comp).

To transfer before Junior year you will need to have very good grades. I’d also suggest you look into the school you plan to try to transfer into and see if they can provide guidance (even within LS&A you have a bunch of choices - [Literature, Science, and the Arts | University of Michigan](http://www.umich.edu/units_lsa.php))

Thanks for your reply! Do you know if the transfer credit equivalencies page lists ALL the courses that would transfer? Because for my school it only lists 10 courses.

No it does not list all of them. If there is no specified equivalency stated, then it will be reviewed by UMich when evaluations are done.

Might I suggest you wait until you can transfer in as a Junior to UofM? They place heavy emphasis on incoming credits when examining your application.

Wow, it almost looks as if sophomore transfers have no chance at all. I guess since my college doesn’t end until May that Michigan would only see my grades from first semester of freshman year?

“I guess since my college doesn’t end until May that Michigan would only see my grades from first semester of freshman year?” Correct. My son applied for Winter Term with no college grades but they allow you to slide your application into the next Spring or Fall. He choose Spring and was accepted with a single term of grades but I think he was very close to getting in out of HS.

I’m not sure if Michigan wants 2 years of grades before transferring or if most people wait 2 years.

Sorry to bump this, but I have a question but I didn’t want to make a new thread. When transferring after sophomore year, how important are high school grades? UM requires them as part of the transfer application, but how much emphasis is placed on them?

If you are entering UofM as a prospective junior, not much emphasis will be placed in your high school transcript. I’m actually not sure they look at it at all.

I had a 2.8 GPA in high school and still got in as a junior transfer, so I wouldn’t sweat that.

ca87, my educated guess would be that while in general in state residents have a better chance at admission no matter what the circumstances, that is not going to make a significant difference in your case.

You realize that there’s virtually no merit aid for transfers, anywhere, right? Why are you starting at a college you already know you can’t afford? You don’t think you’re digging your own grave, here? Maybe a gap year and a do-over on applications would make more sense.

I wouldn’t need aid at UMich which is one of my main reasons for wanting to transfer. The school I’m going to in the fall is about 3x the cost of Michigan and it would be a huge financial sacrifice to my parents to send me there for 4 years. I want to stay debt free
